I'm pretty sure a D serial 3185 does not. The only way to really find out is if you open the case back.

There's always the "wiggletest". Mine failed.

When setting the time and you jump the hour hand around do the other hands wiggle? If so it's a 3185 movement. If not then it's a 3186 with the blue spring. I've never heard of them in D serials though. Also the 3186 seems to only appear in the older GMTIIs that have the "Stick Dial" or the stick shaped || on the dial, not the II.

No, late Z at best. I would not lose any sleep over it.

Certainly a Rolex oddity. I wonder if they'd apply the movement upgrades to an earlier model if the required parts needed replacing on service? Maybe then this "stick dial, new movement" hype will disperse.

My understanding is that they will not conduct upgrades like this when servicing a watch. During a service they replace with original like components to keep the watch as close to what it was like when original.

The 3186 has been reported in late "Z" serials thru the last of the "M" serial numbers. In some of those, not all, the dial had the stick font ( ll vice II). A "D" serial number would have the 3185 movement in it.
The wiggle test is performed by pulling the crown out to move the hour hand. As it is moved the GMT hand will remain steady with the 3186 and wiggle a bit with the 3185. There is also the crown test. Again pull the crown out to move only the hour hand, note the position of the coronet in the crown and make one complete revolution. A 3186 will have moved about 8 hours for the full revolution while the 3185 will move about 5 hours. Again, your "D" serial will have the 3185 in it, which is a fantastic movement, enjoy. |
