What are boxes and papers worth ?
I've learned so much is 30 days and still hunting for my first Rolex a GMT Master II, prefer 2001, 2002, 2003. I like the exposed screws in the case holding the bracelet on. I'm sure they have a name, lol.. I'm torn between a black bezel and a coke bezel. Leaning black.
My question is, how much more can/should you pay for a watch with boxes, warranty card, manual, tags, brochures, etc over a watch with nothing but a box, or nothing at all. I'm not even talking paperwork for service or original transaction receipts, I'm just talking the soft good stuff. It's worth something to the overall price of the watch, right ? |

Generally for a watch this age it will add about another $100 to $200 of the overall cost.

If the watch was recently serviced by Rolex then there is an additional 2 year warranty which indeed has value. A lot of it depends on what you are going to do with your watch...if you are going to wear it and not worry about scratches and condition then I would put very little value on box and papers as long as watch is 100% authentic. Also for those years you are interested in are usually punched papers and not the credit card warranty. If I was going to "collect" the watch then condition of the watch is priority with box, papers next in line. They are called lug holes on the case for the bracelet.

Papers are nice but honestly I don't care about the box. I'm buying a watch. I wouldn't trust a watch just because it has papers. They can be faked. I really think the warranty card is the most important thing now. I wouldn't pay more than a hundred or two for the box and papers and the watches would have to be exact. If the one with no papers was nicer I would buy that.

Very interesting, I was almost sure that I was going to hear that it was much preferred and worth at least 10-15% in the price of the watch which is a good chunk on a $4,000 to $5,000 watch.
I'm happy to hear it actually, this watch will be worn plenty and the box and stuff would be in the back of the closet. I'll only factor in watch quality now. How much does it cost to buy and have changed a bezel insert color? Thanks, |

I agree on the price assesments; boxes and papers to tend to bring more on the GMT years, 2000-2005. I would like to spend $4,500 also, maybe even less, $4,250 and I am having a real hard time finding a nice, clean example. Stuff on e-bay with buy-it-nows of $5,200 or so and I amke offers in the $4,700 range and get an offer back of $5,100 ????? I'll keep looking. |

For an older rare sports steel Rolex a complete set of original box and papers could add £10,000 to the value of the watch.
Just don't tell Larry or Padi.

To me the papers are priceless, this of course is just my opinion as I will not purchase without... some other dont care at all as said its the watch you will be wearing not the box/papers

I've done quite well at getting B&P for most of my purchases. Takes a little more diligence and patience. Albeit, my tudor sub came in RSC service box with service papers.

Box and papers command more $$.
If you ever I tend to sell...you will get bargained down for no b&p...period, the end. If you will never sell...pay what you think the watch is worth and enjoy. |

Right now, 2000 - 2005 GMT II"s complete with their warranty paper, boxes tags booklets etc are selling around $4600 - $4700. Some are higher, but it's tough to find one under $4500. I've seen prices as high as $5200, and they seem to be even higher on ebay than the ones offered here on the forum. Watch only (GMT II) can be found for around $3800 - $4000 plus or minus.
The difference for a complete package GMT II usually sells around 15% more. In my opinion, it is worth the extra expense for the complete watch with paper and accessories. It definitely helps when it comes time to sell. I have a friend looking for one now and he is having trouble finding one in his price range of $4500. He's found a couple but they are always sold before he gets to them. Good luck in your search.

It is DEFINITELY easier to resell with ALL the accessories. The older the watch is, the MORE the accessories are worth. Like others have said it is 10-15% ballpark on new models.

B&p make a watch easier to sell, I don't know how much value they actually add. I personally just want the warranty card. I do keep my boxes though in case I ever do want to sell, but really don't care for the clutter they add to my closet.

B&P add $500-600 in my opinion for the type of watch you are looking for.
I'd say w/o Box/papers, about $4000-$4200 for a nice GMT |

I find marginal stuff without boxes and ppw and questionsbale condition because of the bad pics and minimal description, mid to late 90's, go for about high $3's.
Really nice stuff with boxes and ppw with great pics and pretty clean watches, high $4's, even very low $5's usaully from jewler offering some warrenty period. Years include, some Z's in here and some very, very nice A's, plus some P's, K's and Y's. Not really much in between, a few...... but they go very, very fast. I see lots of Z's that have been worn hard and put away wet with not much documentation. I'm holding out for a P, K or Y in the $4,500 range. |

I sold my pepsi (mid 90s) last week to a friend for 3K. Issue was that it had a sub deployant instead of the GMT and Rolex wanted $900 for a new bracelet. That watch had no b&p but I knew it was all authentic as I had it at the RSC two weeks earlier...

GMT's came new with the Jubilee, 78360 or the 93150 deployment band. If you had the deployment band, it was probably original. If you have the warranty paper, a good way to check on the band it was originally sold with is to look at the style number. If it ends with 9315, it came with the 93150 deployment band.

For modern Rolexes - the warranty card is what is most critical. The last Datejust I bought was missing the box and manuals (but did have the hang tags & warranty card, which was the only reason I bought it.) I was able to easily pick up a replacement box and manuals off Ebay for not much money while still getting a good overall deal on the watch. If I ever want to sell it down the road, it's a lot easier to sell a complete package as that's what buyers like to see.
For vintage Rolexes, I feel complete box and paperwork is extremely important for a lot of buyers and will typically command higher prices than watches without it (obviously there are exceptions for really rare Rolexes, but that's not the norm.) It's also a lot more difficult and costly to locate vintage boxes and manuals as well. Personally, I'd never buy a watch without the warranty paperwork since it tends to be much more difficult to sell down the road at a good price. |
