Alaska Vacation

TRF: I wanted to offer to any member of TRF that may visit the interior of Alaska, Fairbanks or North Pole, a free tour guide. I would be willing to show you around and be your personal tour guide. Alaska is a fabulous place to visit. There are not many WIS people up here and it would be great to meet some fellow watch addicts.

If your in the interior of Alaska and interested in a moose, caribou, Copper Red Salmon, king crab, or halibut dinner on me, please contact me.

This forum and community has been very enjoyable and I look forward to getting to know more of you in the future.

I have cruised around Alaska and gotta say that IMHO one would be challenged to find more stunning scenery any where in the world. Absolutely breathtaking.

When I was at North Pole my childhood ideas about Santa were shattered.

I found out ole St. Nick lives in a 5th wheel and drives a Chevy pick-up!

I think the wife and I are going to drive up there next summer for a few weeks, my wife wants to move there. A few of her friends moved to the new Anchorage office and offered her a job on there team (next year when she is done her school). I am still not sold but I want to check it out first.

Eric- there is no place in the world quite like Alaska. Put it this way; the state is 600,000 square miles in size. There are approximately 600,000 people in the state half of which live in the Anchorage area! The state has the most beautiful areas imaginable and is rich in resources. Alaska is a must see for everyone! I visited Alaska upon graduating from college with my wife ten years ago. We came to Alaska on a two week road trip ten years ago and never left!

I am looking forward to the road trip. We are planing to take two weeks (In July) and drive from Alberta to the Yukon and all thought Alaska (stop for a few days in Anchorage) back along the BC coast and back to Calgary. That will put 10-15K on my truck but it will be worth it.

My Dad ( who worked a lot in NWT, back in the day) told me to visit in the winter before I pack up and move to Alaska. I have been to the high arctic at Christmas time, That was cold.

IF your going to make the trip all the way up to Alaska you must visit the following cities:
Anchorage (coast)
Homer (same leg as anchorage 4 hours away on the coast)
Valdez (coast)
Seward (coast)
Fairbanks (interior)
North Pole (interior)

If you dont make the drive to the interior, fairbanks area, you'll miss Denali State Park. The interior is worth visiting. If you crazy enough to make the trip in the winter, I highly advise not too, you may be able to experience -60F here in Fairbanks in February!

If you go in the winter, we would just fly to Anchorage (that would be another trip, hopefully the Wife's work would pay for that one).

My sisters in laws own a travel agency and have been ALL over the world...If you ask them the one place that you MUST see in all the world they ALWAYS answer the same thing...ALASKA and they are not the outdoorsy type at all

Eric-The salmon fishing just begins in late July. Anchorage is still a nice city to visit. You'll get a small taste of Alaska. There is a lot to do in the summer. You will really like the fact that the sun doesnt set in July and there will be 24 hours of daylight to play with. The winter in Anchorage is not to bad. I highly recommend getting away for a day or two to Girdwood...short drive outside or Anchorage. It a beautiful drive around the coast and the bay. Girdwood is a beautiful ski town that is the home of Alyeska Ski resort. You can tram to the top for stunning views of the mountains and ocean.

I encourage any TRF member to post their travel dates and plans to travel to Alaska and I would be more than happy to tell you what to expect and what you should visit with the amount of time that you have. This is the "last frontier" and Alaska has to be enjoyed firsthand to really experience the beauty and wonder of this place.

My mother was born in Fairbanks since my Grandfather was in the Army. We are going to take the RV up there within a year and drive around. My Fiance and I did a 2 week Alaskan cruise last year and it was amazing.
