Rolex spotting thread

Ok. Following on from a previous thread of mine.
Do you find yourself checking peoples wrists, either on tv or in real life, to try and see what watch they are wearing?????
I have caught myself, and `been caught, craning my neck to see what watch a person in the street is wearing.
I was in Tesco (superstore for anyone who doesnt know) car park the other day. Just parked the Merc up and as soon as I got out a guy walked passed and caught me admiring his all black gmt II. He looked at me as if he thought I was gay or something. When I said 'nice watch' he then cracked a smile.
Anyone else suffer from watchingforwatchesitis???????????????????????

Oh yeah, I'm right there with ya! In fact I've gotten much worse lately Now my husband will check out someone's wrist and ask me what kind of watch he/she is wearing! I'm working on turning him into a WIS

I'm more prone to name every gun in a movie; never really eyeballed a watch on film. However, when I am out, I do often notice what people have on their wrist. I don't care what some say, but you can tell a lot about a person depending on their watch.

Rolex spotting or any fine Swiss timepiece for that matter has become a real hobby for both me & my wife. She's always amazed who wears what.

I find myself doing it all the time. I went to the food store with my wife earlier and stopped at Starbucks for a coffee after. Spotted two DJ's in Shoprite(food store), one TT and one SS with silver dial and one DD homage, probably a Seiko or Pulsar. At Starbucks, we had one Breitling, although I couldn't tell which model but the pilots bracelet was unmistakable.

I do it without even realizing I'm doing it and my poor wife thinks I'm nuts

While we are talking about watch admiration, I wonder what percentage of Rolex watches you spot are real and what percentage is a fake?

Read somewhere there are many more fakes being produced than the real deal.

I even saw a "Replica" for sale of a Oysterdate Precision with a black dial and gold markers/hands, that looked to be 1960's. And man it looked real. If they are faking a 60's Rolex how many new ones could be faked.

I just wonder?

I honestly think you can tell by the way it sits on a wrist and the way a real deal has a certain sparkle...theres just something about a real rolex.
My best mate has an all gold sub with a blue face and to look at him you wouldnt think he would be the type to wear one, let alone afford one.
I said if he ever got mugged to say its a fake, but just looking at it you can tell its not

I've read Rolex produces about 800,000 watches per year. Compare that to 5 million fake Rolexes per year.

I always have my eye on what people are rocking on their wrist, but not for any other purpose than to enjoy it and test my own abilities. My lawyer and I exchanged pleasantries about our GMT's just this past week. He has a pepsi bezel and was surprised to see an all-black GMT. More proof that (to my point) the red/blue bezel is the STAPLE of the GMT line.
The only watch I can really spot well from relatively far is a Rolex, just because I spend so much time staring at them. Despite how much of a part of OUR daily lives they are, I'm surprised how many fine watches I do NOT see.

Ever since I've signed up here on TRF, I have also noticed that I suffer watchingforwatchesitis; especially Rolex for that matter.

Just past weekend on a halibut fishing trip, I noticed the captain was sporting a TT Sub. I said to him, "nice TT Rollie Capt.", and he replied, "this is the ultimate tool watch, but I like to wear my DD with dimonds when dressing up. I can't justify wearing a +$22K watch when fishing." Shortly after that comment, he noticed my DD and I just smiled at him. That same night, I was out at dinner with family, and noticed the same TT Sub on another man's wrist across our table, then another 18YG DD the table next to our's.

I've heard this comment before, and I'm curious. What can you tell about a person from the following?

Short, thin, fit looking 70 year old-wearing MIO heart rate watch--

Average height 5' 9" 200 lb man wearing---

1. Rolex TT GMT II or
2. Panerai 44 mm 27B or
3. Ball Hydrocarbon "Mad Cow"

Trim athletic 50 year old man wearing dress shirt, blue jeans, Casio G-Shock ??

What doe the watch tell you about the wealth, occupation, background or other information on each of these people (all of whom are real people wearing the exact watches I'm mentioning)

yeah i do this constantly and discreetly.... although soemtimes (when appropriate) i will make comments....

when i used to work in hotel, i remember this stunning lady stayed in our suite for the whole week and one day before she went out shopping i mentioned to her quietly "very nice patek mam"....she turned around and was so stunned i actually notice what brand it is..( she has patek 24 in rose gold with diamonds). in the next few days we were chatting for watches everytime i see her and left me with 100 bucks tip

she was definitely one of the coolest guest i've ever had in my time working in hotel.

I've been spotting them for years. In real life, movies, and TV shows. I just spotted another Rolex on TV. Ever see The Greatest American Hero? Our buddy Bill Maxwell, the FBI sidekick of Ralph wears a Pepsi GMT!

So, yea, I am constantly looking and trying not to get caught!

i find it to be pretty detrimental to my health, considering i am now more eager to look at someone's wrist than to watch for cars as i cross the street.

Where I live the Rolex most common is the Sub/date,some DJs,mostly in TT and have seen a few DDs.Have never seen a Expl II or SD worn by someone else...

I am glad to hear I'm not the only one who does this. I especially enjoy the "watch watching" (as I call it) when I'm traveling in a new area. I've even got my wife doing it, as she'll sometimes say, "what's he wearing?"

I spotted two Rollies at dinner last night at the golf club. One gentleman at my table was wearing a FAKE Sub Date. And it was a horrible fake on top of that. It had a quartz movement (the second hand "ticked"), it had a GMTII bezel, and the date magnification was clearly wrong from 5 feet away.

I don't want to comment on what wearing a Rolex says about you. However, I do know that wearing a fake Rolex says something equally as strong about who you are.

Too bad, that guy was a mentor of mine when I started my career. It is like learning the truth about Santa all over again.

Really weird by I sometimes follow a person for a couple steps just to see what watch he is wearing.

I can't imagine any TRF member who would not glance at someone else's watch.

It's just one of those involuntary actions.
