I got an iphone from my brother-in-law and i wanted to know if i could buy service for it online. Its an iPhone original.

I don't think you can activate it "over the Internet". I believe you need to be connected to the hosts cellular network. Before you do that, however, you need to sign up for service with that cellular provider. That you can do over the Internet or in one of that network's retail locations. Most likely your phone is from AT&T. Contact them.

New iPhone 4s can be activated over the air but without an iCloud backup, you will need to plug it into iTunes to add content.

If its a hand-me-down and you have a working sim (3G/3Gs) or micro-sim (4/4s), you can put it into your phone and it should be active. You will still need to use iTunes or jailbreak it for apps, music or whatever.

Interesting first post!

If it is indeed a 2007 first generation iPhone, you'll need to activate it with AT&T via AT&T or Apple Store. You'll need to connect to the activation server via USB cable, either on your computer or theirs.

Over the air activation starts with iOS 5, which requires at least the third generation 3GS from 2009.

Don't feel bad. There will be people buying brand-new phones this Christmas that can NEVER run the version of the OS released before Halloween.

Isn't the 3G3 the new "penny phone" ? I think they're giving those away free with activation. I wouldn't bother trying to activate an original iphone.

Although I absolutely agree with you, someone might want to activate a first gen iPhone with no on-going commitment.
