Price check on these two subs..

I am pondering these two watches at a mid sized family jeweler. Does the 84 watch look like an original dial, and, I am wondering if these prices seem seem reasonable:

(i) approx. 1984 Sub date, no papers, Rolex recent service, polished, nice off white lume dots, case looks excellent, band looks good, but stretched:
$4,200 dollars out the door. 1 year movement warranty

(ii) approx. 2007 Sub date, warranty card from Hong Kong, box, etc. Looks new/mint:
$6,200 out the door. 1 year

its not great, my store would price the 84 below 4k, and give it a 2 year warranty, if its gonna br 4k, its gotta be in the 90's at least, 6200 is too much for a non c sub in my honest opinion.

really..

That's great info. Note that the watches are in California...

Keep the opinions coming, I may crack open the wallet on one of these..

The `07 is almost 1G over the mark , the `84 not as much but still too much but the dial looks ok.

All in all about what I`d expect from a bricks and mortar retailer.

You can do much better from one of TRF`s sellers.

Right on, these are priced way high unless there's serious negotiating built into these numbers I'd look elsewhere, like here on TRF.

Thanks for the input. I really like the faded hour makers and matching faded pearl dot thing on the bezel (not sure what it's called). These vintage features really set this watch apart from the other stainless steel watches I've looked at in person...The only concern I suppose is that it's an older watch, albeit recently serviced.

The plan would be to ultimately use this watch as a weekend Nato strap watch, then continue saving for a a newer GMTII in the spring when I'll have some funds free'd up....Man, I have this Rolex sickness in a bad way...

looking closer...

When I blow up the photo from earlier today it sure looks like the hands don't have the same yellowed look as the hour markers...The hands look whiter. So I suppose this could mean that the watch has newer hands installed. Does this hurt the value? Am I slowly turning into a WIS...

you give up the luminescence with the older tritium markers and imho, i don't really think they hit the vintage mark quite on the money, the white gold surround dials don't typically produce the patina that becomes so desirable.

Yup, it's definately not a true vintage, but it looks pretty good to me.

Based on what you see here, what's a good price from the buyers standpoint- I was thinking $3,800 out the door ....

just do a search on TRF for the past year or two... the prices you'll find here are typically fair.

fyi:
*full service for a sub can be close to $1000 (w new crystal and bezel) at RSC. (mine was $900 last december)
*a stretched bracelet is another $1000 to replace.

i would go for a newer one but not the one you have pictured.

ps if you really are drawn to the vintage markers, have you looked into a 5513??? they are in that price range.

The stretched bracelet and polish are worrisome to me. With cash in hand I wouldn't sweat trying even lower than that to start. 3500, maybe 3400.

I was in your shoes a year ago and I think I offered around 32 I think and the guy didn't throw me out of the store. When they counter don't be afraid to say "thank you but unfortunetely that's not going to work for me" and walk out. You can always come back in an hour and accept.

The 07 sub should be around $5200 to $ 5500. $6200 is way over priced.

There are probably better watches out there that are way better value. In fact, not probably at all, absolutely certainly. I'd keep looking. Use the magic buyers word, ie 'no' and walk away.

Ge'ez, for that price just get the sub-c for a few hundred more - that is unless you prefer the look of the older once you have pictured/

Icon14 Agreed

The older sub is more accurately priced. I'll bring some cash and see how much they really want to sell it.

Today could be the day- my first Rolex...!

The finish on the 84 Sub seems too shiney. It looks like RSC didnt use the correct buffing wheel on it. The 07 Sub looks good, but not that much less than a Sub c.

I think you're better off looking at the for sale section here. IMO you can get a better piece for a better price... Best of luck with whatever YOU decide to do.

great deal...

Negotiated a better deal thanks for the great input here. Got verification from my jeweler this afternoon that the paperwork and watch match up. Yes, this is the real deal...

I was mistaken, the 1984 ish watch has all papers, receipts, outer/inner boxes, manual, rolex cloth, proof of Rolex service this summer where it was rebuilt- original dial cleaned, new hands, brought up to spec. Bracelet looks awesome. I really like the fade hour and pearl colors.

I am on cloud nine right now... I love this Sub...

It is alright to pay a little more for what you love.
I am sure many of us have paid a lot more for what we don't love!

the 2007 SubDate seems reasonably priced.

the 1984 is a bit high even if it is vintage, try to get it at 3k or lower then its about right. though am not that much into vintage.

Good to hear. It's tough to wipe that grin off you face when you first walk out with a new watch.
