Need some help buying an Explorer I (ref 114270)

Hello fellow Rolex Enthusiasts,
I am new to the forum but not new to Rolex. I currently own an Air King and would like to add the Explorer I to my collection. I am looking for a ref 114270 model (36mm). However, I 'm not sure what the lettered series mean: A,B,C,D, etc.. Is one series better than another? Is there a particular series I should try to get? What should I look out for when buying a used Explorer I? What price range should I stay within?

Thanks for your help,
Sam

Rolex has never made a series of any watch all the letters and numbers are is serial a approximation when a case was stamped. The 114270 Explorer has changed very little since 2001 what change is purely cosmetic.

Serial numbers don't really matter, you could buy an older series that is in better shape than a newer one. You should look out for the seller instead, if it's a trusted seller then you shouldn't worry about getting shafted. Having said that you should check out what DavidSW has in stock, he's very well known and trusted, and has really good prices good luck with your hunt and post some pictures when you find one

Thanks for the feedback, guys. Subtona, whats the difference between the 14270 and the 114270 models? Why do you recommend the former?
