Insecurity
Today I took delivery of my latest Rolex, a mid sized 31 mm steel and yellow gold datejust with champagne Roman dial. Perfect for a woman who wears yellow gold and white gold. For UK readers, I part exchanged my last one (a 26 mm all steel Datejust) at Blowers jewellers and had a very good deal and excellent service.
But I seem to have a problem. Having just been through the careful process of "peeling" my new watch (pulling all those little protective clear sticky bits off it) I have put it on the kitchen counter where I can admire it. Obviously it should be on my wrist, but I've just realised I'm terrified of scratching it! This is stupid, a watch is made to be worn. And I remember 25 years ago when I bought my first Rolex, I put it on my wrist in the jewellers and that is where it stayed from that point onwards, until it was a little battered and I had to replace the bracelet. I was not precious about it. So why on earth do I have such a problem with this new one? "It's too nice to wear". Have any of you been through that and if so what is the best and quickest way to get over it? I am aware of how stupid this post sounds but I appear to have developed a neurosis since it arrived this morning. Is this a female issue or do men suffer from it too? |

Congrats on the new purchase
I suffer from this also. but I usually am just careful when wearing. My watches stay in good condition. But after a few here and there scratches it all becomes easier to wear daily. :) strap it on and enjoy that new purchase. |

Remembering you can have it polished makes it easier to wear... so enjoy it...

+1 Great advice here. I went through the same thoughts as you did when I first picked up my 14060M, but realizing that a polish will make it brand new again gave me confidence that I should just enjoy it in good health. Life is too short to worry about those things.

Thank you all for the responses - I'll wear it out to lunch tomorrow - but really I bought it to wear each day for work - hopefully I can get over these silly worries. The first scratch or ding will hopefully cure me! I must remember to push my arm behind me as I go through doorways - they seem to be the things to watch (ditto walls). On one occasion last year I was jogging down the street with a friend and our wrists clashed leaving dings in both our watches.

its tough, im still trying to get over mines, but you have to get used to wearing the watch, i recommend you wear it around the house first for a few days or first two weeks and then when you get used to it wear it around town.
i never wear it in the shower or anything strain-e-ous like cooking or around young grandchildren that need to be carried. also recommend a beater watch, most rolex are for rotation meaning you wearing it 2 to 4 days out of the week and the beater watch the other days to save the wear and tear of the rolex. you get older and wiser and more careful. my first 5 watches i had wreckless abandon as well. now i am more careful. congrats |

Try wearing a 44MM IWC that has a lead weight for anti magnetism.. That thing is a door frame magnet. pun intended.

Door frames are awful!! I've damaged all sorts of things going through doors - including every watch I've ever known. I don't know how men manage - being wider with bigger watches!

Good advice InTime, I'll gradually build up. The weird thing is I wear my vintage (?) 14 year old diamond datejust all the time. I suppose being small (26mm) the scratches don't notice on that one. The 31mm is a bit more shiny and blingy with the oyster bracelet. Good to know I can get it polished up if necessary.

if it helps most people will tell you that the glass on your rolex can only be scratched by a diamond! so dont wear diamonds! hehe

Congrats Lindsay, gotta wear that thing and enjoy. It will get a few scratches and the first is painful. But when it gets time for a service it can be returned to new.

Yep, put a scratch in it intentionally and the worry period is over. I have actually done this.

I suffer at the same affliction; watches, cars, guns, swords... My simple solution to the problem is to buy Two of everything that I plan on using daily.

It took me two weeks to peel the plastic off my watch(and I was wearing it every day). This is the first watch that I too have been afraid to scratch. Luckily I wear long sleeve shirts so it gives it some protection.
One thing I can tell you is that compared to my previous daily(Panerai) this feels like theres nothing on my wrist. With the Pam on there, my arm would swing like a pendulum and hit walls and door frames all the time. Luckily, my arms are now in sync. Good luck with the new watch and just wear it. |

Congrats Lindsay!!!!! I just got my plat YM in October and two nights ago I got a scratch on the bezel playing with my dog. I was upset for a few minutes and then put it back on and got over it. I think you should wear it and enjoy it like you did your previous one.

Honestly, just wear it. I also own a TT Datejust II with a champagne diamond dial and fluted bezel. I was really scared when my hand was blessed with wearing one because I was afraid of scratching it. Eventually, I ended up slightly chipping the sapphire crystal and got some minor scratches on the bezel
After only owning it for a few months its got quite a bit of wear on the usual places where you would most expect it. Specifically on the bottom of the clasp and on the gold links of the bracelet. I look at it and I'm confident enough to say I still love my watch. It's hard to get over but if you're gonna wear it every day and you're scared, you might as well saran wrap your wrist. Otherwise, just send it every time within a 5-10 year period or when you find the scratches to be too much |

Thanks to every one of you for the great advice - I feel a lot better knowing I'm not the only Rolex owner who has had this problem! And I loved the cartoon - brilliant!
I'll make sure I get a scratch or two next week .... |

In the shower - eek! I did that once many years ago and I'd forgotten to screw the crown in - a lesson learned! But I'll give it a go ...

Definitely a lot of truth in that - especially where cars are concerned. I mollycoddle my car even more than my watch - avoiding public car parks etc. As a result I get a ding every time I drive it, and I have no idea how.
