1992 16618 question
Hi,
Hope you can give me some advice... I am about to buy a second hand 16618 for about £7,000. It looks pretty good. Has a certificate with a number. The shop offers a years guarantee. I am a little concerned however The guy (its a resller of 2nd hand rolex shop) says as the certificate says 2002 it is a 2002 model yet the code number means its a 1992 manufacture - should I be concerned? He says age doesn't really matter as it is working fine and looks fine - Surely the wath has a heart and they wear out so 25 year old watch will die soon? The strap is fine but it only just fits my wrist - can there be links missing (My wrist is not huge) - how many links should it have? Also the strap has pins not little screws - is this okay? There are no serial numbes on the strap at all - On the back of the buckle it says R10 or something... Should I be worried... Many thanks |

Why don't you post some pics of it? I am not sure about the certificate. I have never seen somebody wearing a 16618.

May I ask who the dealer is? The 1992/2002 issue does seem strange. The "R10" would be a date code for the clasp: Read about those codes here: http://www.oysterworld.de/1/index.htm "R10" would be October 1993! Hmm.......very STRANGE! If you could post pics of the watch AND name me the dealer, I can better tell you what I think.

Rather not name the shop except by PM as I dont want to slag them off...
What about the pins vs screws - is that unusual? |

On some OLD models (LOOONG before 1992!!), Rolex used a "riveted" band (riveted plates on the sides of the bracelet).
But the bracelet on a SUB DATE, YG, from 1992 should definately have SCREWS on the links at either side near the clasp, NO pins. Please PM me the name of the dealer. I might know him, might not.

Firstly, I would like to say that the price is too high.
It appears that the watch is circa 1992, not 2002 as per the dealer. DO NOT believe the dealers, most are FOS! For that sort of money, I'm sure you'll get one a lot newer. Better still, I'm sure you could twist the arm of an AD on a brand new one and probably get around 20% off. AD's tend to discount (%) solid gold watches more than SS. Just my 2 cents. John. |
