EX II 42 owners, help me out here
I have yet to try one on! But while I wait for my AD to get one in, I keep searching for reasons to buy it when it does... For those of you lucky ones that already HAVE the new model, here is a consideration/question.
Fact number 1. I am getting old. Fact number 2. My Ex-Navy Pilot eyes, 20-12 in flight school, are somewhere around 4,300 - a million. I exagerate of course, but I continue to have to wear reading glasses more and more and have progessively gotten the stronger and stronger lenses.... See Fact number 1 Fact number 3. It really is difficult for me to see the face of my Daytona now, unless I'm wearing my glasses I have to take a several second stare, and hold it about 17 feet away to be able to read the time; (You can forget me ever seeing the totalizers... I need a lupe for that). Question number 1. To those of you that have them, how much does the extra 2 millimeter size face, AND the mercedez AND the wider hands AND the basic fact the face is a lot-less cluttered, make it easier to read the time at a glance? This is especially for those old farts like myself, who's eyes just don't have the strength they used to. Is it a noticible difference? Would it help me being able to read the time wihout a major 5-minute procedure now? Comments, are welcome. |

I think what you need is a 47mm Panerai!

Actually IMHO to answer your question YES, it is very easy to read. The dial is not cluttered at all as you stated and I personally love the larger dial and huge hands... here is a pic for you, let me know what you think Paul Also, wanted to make sure I typed large so you could read it

I have both the SS Daytona wht dial and the 42mm Explorer wht dial. The Explorer is much easier to read due to larger hands and less cluttered dial. The larger dial size does not make that big of a differnce to me. It is the larger hands and less busy dial that makes it easier to read.

Paul, I'm in the same boat. I can't speak to the EX II 42, but I can still read my EX II polar 16570 with very little difficulty even though I can't read anything closer than arms length without cheaters. The lack of clutter and the black hands on the white background makes it readable even though it is out of focus.
As for the date...without cheaters it just looks like a black smudge at 3 o'clock For reference, I find my EX II easier/quicker to read than my Casio G Shock or Timex Ironman.

Can't help you, Paul.
Fact no.1: I'm not old Fact no.2: I'm not old enough to need to wear reading glass. Fact no.3: you need to physically try it on to judge it for yourself. (hope this helps ) |

Paul,
I am in the same situation you are! I bought a white 42mm EXII about 2 months ago, and I couldn't be happier! I can easily read the time now without my "cheaters" (it's not super-sharp, but the big black-outline hands against the large white dial make it easy to read the time). I still need my specs to read the date though, even with the magnifier. Of course, I find myself wearing my specs and staring at the watch from time to time anyway, just to admire the clean design and quality of construction. I also have an "original design" white EXII, and I find that while it is also quite legible, the new larger EXII is noticeably more legible for my eyes when I am not wearing my cheaters. Good luck - hope the new EXII works out for you! Steve |

Paul the Maxi dials on the GMTIIC and the 16610LV are a lot easier to read than the Daytona. I would have to imagine the new EXPII would be just as good if not even better.
Larger hands, larger plots, and larger dials really do make a big difference.

I've worn glasses with progressive lenses for 47 years but over the holidays, I had double cataract surgery. MY distant vision is now 20/20 but reading glasses are required for close work so legibility has become an important factor in my watch selection.
And it was for that very reason that I went with a white 216570. Love the large black outlined hands and orange fourth hand. Fortunately my AD had both black and white in stock so I could compare their legibility side-by-side and on my wrist. The white was the definite winner. Now in the morning, I reach for the EXPII rather than my glasses. Go for it! BTW, I take back all the mean and hateful things I ever said about the Cyclops. The new one with AR coating is wonderful and a blessing to my new eyes. Fr. John+ |

When I look at my Daytona I am not checking the time.
However, if i were checking the time I would have to say that it's more difficult than with other Rolex sports models. Any Explorer, I, II or 42 is easier to read than the Daytona; likewise for any sports model as compared to the Daytona.

LOL, you ain't the only one... The Daytona is eye candy without peer. Some days I start the chrono at precisely 12 noon and the check in with it periodically to enjoy the visual jam session of parallel lines. Awesome.
That said, I, too, am considering an EXII as my does-everything watch and am sure any one of them will be a superior readability experience. |
