Icon5 Rolex Expedition, your thoughts???

Well, many of us were inspired to buy a Rolex through all the years of seeing National Geographic Advertisements for Rolex. And seeing all the Expeditions that Rolex has sponsored with their Watches being used as timekeepers for the expedition.

So what are some of your thought and ideas for a good adventure/expedition to take your Rolex on?

I am thinking of a couple ideas for myself after leaving Afghan next year. Have already completed several personal expeditions/treks overseas and now looking at some more:

My ideas:
  • Trek across Nepal from Western Border to Eastern Border
  • Appalachian Trail or Pacific Crest Trail thru hikes
  • 5 continent Hunting Trip
  • Kayaking down Mekong River in Vietnam/Laos

My tamer version of a good adventure:
  • 7 days on a Live Aboard exploring Tubbataha Reef, Sulu Sea
  • Diving in the Maldives or the Great Barrier Reef in Australia
  • Trekking up to the peak of Mt. Apo, Mindanao PI with a height of 9,691 feet above sea level.

Oh, the trek up Mt. Apo is going to be a test alright, but more for me than for the T/T Blue. I'm always green with envy whenever you talk about your experience abroad and the pictures you post.

How about an expedition down to the mall and looking in the AD's window
Seriously, I'd like to do a bicycle ride in Vietnam from Hanoi to Saigon. Not the most difficult, but I will do it in the next 18 months.

How do the Vietnamese take to Yanks now ? Are there still any feelings about the war, or have they moved on ?

The ride from Hanoi to Saigon takes 10 days in an organised ride. The total package including airfares bikes, guides etc. is about $4,300 and the proceeds go to a charity of your choice.

No issues at all. That was over 30 years ago. I started going to Vietnam 12 years ago, and was treated very nice by all the people. Did not go to the far north though, but was manily in Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Mythos Delta Region (big former VC area) and Saigon (HCMC). Most of the Vietnamese I met in the south were proud to tell me how they fought along side Americans. Most also expressed how they did not like the communist government. Have several good friends I was in the military with that have married Vietnamese girls and live and work now in Veitnam. No, issues to them. Remember just within several year of the US winning against the Japanese in WWII, there were some 50,000 american service members (inlcuding my Uncle) who were marrying Japanese ladies! Also, now in Veitnam many American companys are doing bussiness. Ironic, Black Hawk Tactical gear, the largest producer of military tactical web gear, holsters, backpacks, etc.. that is used by the US Military and PRivate Security in Iraq is all produced in Vietnam. Most all civilian Backpacks that are sold in the USA as well are produced in Vietnam.

Any American who travels to Veitnam will be warmly welcomed. It is a great country to travel, explore, and visit.

Chad,

I think a new GMT-II would work great on any of these trips, and even on a dive trip.

Seriously, I would wear something that is easily visible in low light, rugged and has a 24 hour hand. These are the reasons why the Ex II is favored by so many explorers on land expeditions.

On my expeditions, which are mostly underwater, I have worn my original Sub, the SD and my Daytona. On my last Titanic expedition, Ralph White and I wore the two engraved Rolex watches that Rolex USA supplied to us shortly before the expedition on the first dives. I wore the engraved SD and a Daytona in Mir 1 on Dive 1, and Ralph wore an engraved Ex II in Mir 2. He switched the Ex II for the 1680 Sub he has worn since the late 60s, including on the expedition that discovered the Titanic. The engraved SD is the only one of its kind in the world, and Ralph is leaving me the engraved Ex II in his will.

I wore my Ex II when I went motorcycling in Iceland. I have come very, very close to wearing my GMT-II on major expeditions, but something always sways me to the others. However, if I had the new GMT-II, I think I would leave the others at home.

Thanks. And thanks to the members of this forum who talked me into keeping my Daytona when I contemplated selling it last year. I'm glad I kept it in the family.

Hey David,

How about some nice recent ads on the white Exp-II?

Thanks - JJ
