Daytona Issues - Options?
Long time lurker. Mostly check it out every couple of days or so, and greatly appreciate the wisdom and good spirit of this forum.
However, I do have one general query ... I read more and more stories from people such as Blue Bull who with respect to purchasing a Rolex Daytona - "Bought mine last week ~ MSRP,no deposit, one week waiting period". And other very complementary remarks from other posters about their ADs. And if you can't get a watch from an AD- you only need go to a place like Alan Furman for a reasonable deal. As a resident of Melbourne, Australia, I'm absolutely amazed by the lack of quality watch places in a city of over 4 million people. You can't seemingly get a Daytona for love nor money. Per example. Just this afternoon I strolled into 1 of 2 ADs in Melbourne (mid CBD, Collins St). I was window shopping the Rollies and then put the question to the assistant as to whether she had an SS Daytona. Of course, she claimed she had not. We then discussed how the store now had a philosophy of no waiting list for the Daytona because it just got too ridiculous. Out of curiosity, I asked the list price in Australia - $11,500 apparently - I then indicated that I would pay a lot more than that just to get one right now. She responded - how much would you pay? I then said $15,000. She then appeared to consider and then she would need to speak with someone out the back. After an apparently lengthy conferral, she came back and said unfortunately they don't have one. Obviously the amount was not sufficient. What in blazes are they looking for in terms of price? Are there any reasonable options in Oz for someone who wants to get one properly? Or can one only get it via the net or grey market, second hand? Even grey market second hand is a very limited crap shoot. Missed out by 5 minutes 2 times. In short. I am tremendously envious of the people who can walk into a dealer and just pay list price. Still, I honestly just don't see how that's possible unless you have bought half a dozen timepieces from them previously. |

Hi Versus, and welcome to TRF!
Well, I do understand your frustration, and I can only but say that in many parts of the world, the demand for Daytonas is too crazy I have had 3 Daytonas myself since I have a good, long term relationship with my AD and have bought a LOT of Rolex watches from him. If a person gets an SS Daytona from an AD at LIST and he has never dealt with that AD before, I would say he is l...ucky My suggestion is to just get an SS Daytona from a reliable grey market seller like alanfurman.com or www.watchfinder.co.uk IF there comes a price increase in September or October (NO one knows yet, I must add), then you might as well just get one NOW. Another strategy is to just let you be put on a waiting list like pretty much all over the world, and some day you will get that famous call you will never forget I wish you luck!

Buy grey market and pay the price now, because you may be waiting for a while to get one at MSRP from an AD. There will be more price increases in the future.

There's only one AD in Perth. The waiting list for a SS Daytona has about 40 names on it. The last person to get one waited 4 years!
If I wanted one I don't think I could wait that long! |

Without a blink and any hesitation the reply was: 7 years for the White Face Daytona 9 years for the Black Face Daytona

9 years is way too much. You don't know if you are going to be around in 9 years . It's a bit ironic to wait 9 years for a watch. If somebody has the money to buy it he could search in other countries. I have been many times at the bulgarian Rolex AD which is owned by a turkish family. They were the first ones in the balkan region to have the 116710 and they always have available stock. If i wanted a daytona i could call them right and go pick it up after a week. they are never out of stock when it comes to daytona. I don't think that there is a point to wait for 9 years.

Ok now i get it. I live in thessaloniki the last 2 years which is the second largest city in greece and i saw a daytona at the window display only once. When i go to other countries like russia bulgaria serbia their AD's are always full of daytonas. The ironic thing is that these countries are actually really poor compared to greece but they still manage to sell more watches than the greek ad's.

Spacedweller has it exactly right. You earn the right to buy a Daytona by being loyal and decent to your AD and by developing a relationship with him. Usually it is a second or third watch, and you have bought the first two from this AD. I am on a list now, and the deal is funny. There is a local physician here who is ahead of me, and he called the AD and told her that he wanted the next 2 of them, one for him and one for his friend. They asked if the friend was from here and a customer of theirs. He said no. The AD said no, only to him will the Daytona go, next one to me if I want it. If I don't want it I will go down on the list.
So they sell Daytonas to good customers, people who will be seen with the watch in the community and who will spread good will about such AD. It seems like it is an earned honor in a way, although I was called first when their LV came in and I went over and got that. Oh, and by the way, my AD would not even think of charging more than MRSP, ever, on any watch. |

I have never understood why Rolex doesn't produce more Daytonas since there seems to be a demand for them. This "forming a list" and making the purchase predicated on having done previous business with the jeweler seems a little much to me. The Daytona is a nice chronograph, sure, but other manufacturers also make nice chronographs. I guess I just don't get it. Perhaps I should celebrate that my focus is on some of the other models, the Datejust, GMT Master II and the Submariner/Sea Dweller.

Greetings Everyone....
This is my first post on the forum. This topic hits home with me, since I've been trying to get a SS Daytona in South Florida for about 2 years now. No AD will even discuss a list or position on a list. Instead, two of them say that they now hold a lottery drawing for any SS Daytona that comes in, where the sales person who wins gets to call the customers on his/her list. I've bought several watches from each of the 2 major ADs in the area and still get no special treatment..... |

If you're willing to pay that much extra, it seems the logical approach would be to take a flight to somewhere you can get one. A couple days on the beach (or in the casino), and a new watch....What could be better...... |

Bought two Rolex watches from the same AD. Only with the purchase of the second one did I get on the famous list.He said that there was currently a dozen people already on it, and they get two SS Daytonas per year(one white, one black). He also said as I was now a valued customer I would be bumped up the list.........he couldnt say exactly when it would arrive,or what colour it would be......this is a bit of an issue as it's the black faced one that I want.Talk about lucky dip !

I really HATE how some AD's exploit the situation and demands a lot more than MSRP, or ask valued customers to buy for like 100 K to get the SS Daytona. Or those who even "gamble" about who on the list is going to get it
Did I get my message through?

Thanks for the encouragement!
I decided to inquire with slightly less famous ADs in the area with the hope that it will go faster.... One AD told me he would "see what he can do" after I told him that I was interested in two watches. So...we'll see. |

I may be cynical, but I think these "waiting lists" are BS!
If they don't think you're a good enough customer, then they say there is a 2,3,4 year or whatever else come out of their a$$. I'm sure a good enough customer will get one within a few months. Anyway, here in Adelaide, our one and only pathetic and arrogant AD had one about a year ago. I have never bought anything from him, and I am not really interested in the new SS Daytonas, however while I was there I thought I'd ask the question. The assistant said that they had a black dial one in the safe. I asked the price and was told that it would be sold as a pair. That is, if you bought a Rolex, then you would have the option to also buy the SS Daytona at RRP (recommended retail price). I insisted to know the price of the Daytona alone. After some deliberating, he said I could have it for A$15,000. I said, "thank you for your time, but no thanks". John. |
