Question about Rolex service

I searched for this but could not find anything. If it has been discussed, please point me in the right direction.

The time has come to send my Explorer II to the spa. It will go to the RSC in Dallas. My questions are:

1) Do you guys normally send it directly to Rolex over registered mail, or do you have an AD send it to Rolex for you (I am afraid they will send it to their own watchmaker ... I only want Rolex to work on my baby)?

2) If you send it yourself, any packing tips (other than clear tape is a no-no according to Rolex).

Thanks for the help!

I always send it myself, no need for a middleman.

Give the Dallas RSC a call and they will give you exact mailing instructions and even send you a box if you so prefer.

If you request an AD to send it to Rolex they will. How in the world are they going to dupicate the paperwork??

Send it yourself. Call RSC and they will give you instructions.

Keep in mind that by letting an AD send it will also increase your total cost.

I don't like sending watches to Rolex because these watches are more value if all original with its original use. We don't know today what the collectors will be looking for in the current models. What will Rolex change in dials in the Future and what exactly is the exclusivity of the new watches until they change. Like the story of a wholesaler I heard about sold a watch to a dealer an E serial GMT bc he had the rare gmt dial with black boarder on cream. If you had an E GMT with this dial and send it to Rolex they would send you back the watches with a service dial. I rather non Rolex service bc I know unless I tell them change this they wont. Also if I tell them hold all original things you take off they will give it back to me. Rolex keeps everything. I don't trust Rolex bc I think they don't know a thing about collecting all they know is what Rolex makes them do on service. Another thing if for any reason it has to go back to rolex for readjustment thats another 8 weeks with no watch. A local watchmaker will have less then week 1/2 turn around and if needs readjust just see him and you probably have your watch back the next day.

Send it it yourself. I have heard too many horror stories about shady dealers who don't actually send it to Rolex but rather have their own in-house watchmakers fix it.

I have also heard of shady dealers that charge more than they should for just mailing it in.

With all respect. This is the very thing that gets these stories started. "I;ve heard".

An authorized dealer will send the watch to Rolex. Rolex will send paperwork back indicating what needs to be done. They will also send a two year warranty. The watch will come back in a Rolex box or pouch.

You get all that. The dealer knows you get all that. Rolex knows you get all that.

You will certainly get all that id you send it yourself and as mentioned you might sauve a few $$, but these "stories" .......

One of AD's in town sends watches out every Monday to RSC.

The other AD in town has a watch person on staff that is awesome and she can do the work for le$$ and quicker. I'm sure a receipt from an AD should carry as much weight as RSC receipt.

I just sent my sub in weeks ago. I called RSC - Dallas to let them know I needed service and they did fax me instructions on how to submit my watch. I also asked them for boxing and they said they would not provide (maybe she was just having a bad day). Brown reinforced tape is a must and needs to be applying cleanly on a new box. Do not reuse an old box or they will not accept delivery. Address to RUSA - don't put Rolex anywhere on the box!!! Send it yourself, insure it and it will all work out. I hope to have mine back in a couple weeks looking like new!

Thanks! That's what I will do. I called RSC and they did not mention anything about sending packing materials. Anyway, a box is a box is a box. She was very adamant about the brown tape.

Thanks again to all who chimed in for the good comments!

USPS Register requires you use brown tape all around the box. A square or rectangular box will need 6 tape around the box. This is to ensure no tampering.
Post Office will tape it for you.
Don't waste time using the clear tape.

The lady at the RSC said they would not accept the package if taped with clear tape.

The Post Office too won't accept it. They will use the brown tape and tape over the clear one.
Old fashion brown tape. Lick and tape.

+1 jfisher

Had my former watch serviced 3 times by RSC NY. Each time it came back looking brand new.

I spent a lot of money on my former and current watch and i'm not letting anyone other than RSC touch it (using Rolex tools and Rolex parts).

Here is what you do:

Get a cheap plastic container, wrap your watch in bubble wrap and put it container.

Get a fine tip black sharpie marker

Get some bubble wrap (they sell it at post office) or other packing material.

Go to post office, get a priority mail medium size flat rate box.

Pack watch securely using packing material. Make sure the box is packed just full till when you close flaps of box nothing moves around when you give it a little shake. Do not tape flaps of box shut.

Using black marking pen write directly on the top of the box (lower half) your return address and the rolex addresses. When you write, don't write close to the middle of the box, that is where the post office employee will put the brown tape.

Take the box to the counter and ask for Registered Mail insured for x thousand dollars. The postal employee will get a registered slip and give it to you to fill out. While you are filling it out they will seal all the seams and flaps of the box with brown tape and then use their stamp to stamp the tape and box to make sure the box is not tampered with.

After you have filled out the form give to the employee, and pay.

That is all there is to it.

The post office will tape it for you and supply you with a free box. The only thing you have to bring is the packing material and the watch.

If you are curious as to the cost go to the USPS website Postage Calculator. Enter the info, click on Priority Mail Medium Box, then add extra services, click registered then add how much insurance you want. The link is below.

USPS Register.
Box must be completely sealed with brown tape including all exposed seams.
A different color box can be used.
