Final Tudor Consideration-7928
Yes, this should be my last Tudor verification post. I located a real Tudor Sub from the 60's. After staring at Tudor dials/movements for a few months I now have enough confidence in my abilities to identify a real Tudor dial. The watch is in my possession for one week for a no commitment verification period. but I want to get the experts opinion on some smaller issues with this watch in terms of later resale value. The asking price i was given is 2k.
(a) The dial has a scratch just above the 6, the owner said it was done when a bad watchmaker did a service. (b) the rotor is brass, the rest of the movement is steel. (c) no bracelet (d) hands definitely show age, small holes on hour and minute hands. (d) missing the pearl on the bezel

on the wrist...
This old watch is very comfortable, even on the lousy strap. Although I'll wait for some additional feedback until I buy this one...

For me this watch has too many issues to be worth 2K. If a bad watchmaker scratched the dial during a bad service what else did he do?? Just my opinion.

great feedback...
Thanks Rick for the feedback. This is why I like TRF so much.
Yes, the scratch can't be removed, that's definitely an issue when I sell it. I am trying to put a monetary value on the watch. I am going to wear it this week, and see if I will just return it to the buyer next week. I won't buy watches via the internet, and these watches are typically hard to find in person. This is the third 7928 I've seen in person; the previous two had re-done (fake) dials. I have a good working history w/the seller, so a lowball offer may be in order here. A few more items: the original case has been polished, the bezel is fairly new, and this watch keeps the same time as my recently serviced 1984 sub (< 1 second/day), not bad for a 1966 watch...

Reality...
I met with a trusted watch repairman today to discuss the 7928 Tudor Submariner on loan to me this week. This guy set me straight on condition of the watch, and most specifically on the value- which according to people who buy and sell watches is about one third of the listed price, if that, and if I really want to own it....ouuchhhh...
I put my other SuB 16800 on a new black leather Spiegel strap with white stitching- It looks like I will continue to wear the Sub on the weekends and ponder an offensive lowball offer on the Tudor.... The GMT is still my weekday favorite...see avatar...

Details...
I am going to return the Tudor Sub back to the original owner in the morning. I am convinced that the price is too high for this partially flawed "head only" purchase. I may attempt a low offer, but I believe his price expectation may be out of my thinking for this watch. I learned quite a bit with this little research project...
Just to be thorough, for my own record keeping purposes, here are the details that I can see on the 7928 Tudor Sub Caseback outer: Original oyster case by Rolex Geneva caseback innter: Montres Tudor SA Geneva Switzerland Patented stainless steel 7928 VI.66 Movement Tudor Auto Prince 17 seventeen jewels 390 Montres Tudor SA Swiss Geneva between lug holes: 7928 stainless steel 568XXX

I'm liking the patina on the dial and hands ...
Seems to have a character 'vintage' look and I guess that's why we buy them.
I'm not lovin' the lug at 7:00 o'clock - could just be a shadow though ? Polished lugs are ok as long as they are even. I have a 5513 with one skinny lug and it really annoys me. |

Price...
If I brag to everyone on TRF about the great price I received the watch will no doubt break, get damaged/stolen, etc....
Send me PM if you want to see a number...

The symptoms for this issue was a metal rubbing sound when the rotor turns. He needs more time to find the part, it could be lodged in the movement, otherwise he has it on back order. Man, I haven't even paid my lowball price for this watch and I am now waiting for service... I must learn patience....and enjoy my Sub and GMT MII

old tudors...
Well he has offered to find and replace the part for me, so I'll let him do that. Once I actually own the watch I will find a backup movement for it...
Now, on to the other Tudor 7928, the one with the mismatched case and caseback and the words "Feromin" on the dial, with a ETA24XX movement... I've been buying a few watches from this small store, and I am considering selling a few watches for him, which means my negotiating power on this second Tudor will only increase...So far I've heard a good 7928 case has some value, and an older ETA movement has less.... I am pondering another lowball offer....on the second lousy looking dial Tudor...

i've got two of them - spent way too much time looking
for em - if you need one, i just paid $75 but they are new, unused
i'll let you have one if you can't find one anywhere else i'll get a photo up in a little bit here's a shot - i've got 3 of them - reason i snagged when i found them is, the problem with using one off another movement, is that it's been used one time - taking it off, leaves it questionable in my mind - they're about 1/3 the size of a grain of rice, if that big |

i still remember when these came in and
i called the wife over, told her to look thru the loupe at what we'd paid $225 for....
she looked at me like i'd grown a 3rd eyeball in the center of my forehead and these you can see without a loupe then when i bought a tritium pearl for almost as much, but you really needed a loupe to see, her famous line "honey, we need to talk" |
