Old or New
Hi guys cant decide what to do and would appreciate your advise!
So should i buy a used sub 9 years old that hasnt been serviced or should I take the plunge and put the extra cash towards a new one? What will hold its value more? |

If you only look at the "value-holding", you should go for the used Sub
In 10 years, the 10-yo Sub C may be slightly more valuable than the 19yo "old model" (it could be vice-versa though..) but the initial owner will have taken the big hit after using the new watch. As a personal note: Buy what you like - life is too short for compromises |

Well in general all Rolex watches are good for 50 plus years if correctly serviced, even a 9 years old Sub that's not been serviced.Well if condition of watch is good then its been looked after by previous owner, and today most watches like the Sub are not used as a tool watch but mostly pampered it should be fine. But it would be wise to budget in the price a service, once that's done there is no reason the older sub should not perform same a new one.All the Rolex sports watches over the past 50 odd years have always held there price well in the market compared to many other brands so no problem which ever one you buy.

I would buy a new one if this is your first Rolex as the improvements make it a better all round watch. A 10 year old one is still a good watch though, but i wouldn't buy any Rolex for holding value or investment.

I recommend you look at both and decide which one you like best. The one you like best would be worth more to you.

I would wait to see any New Releases at Basel Fair next week.
Ideally Rolex will announce a 42mm Submariner with more tapered lugs like the New Explorer II 42mm. The current Submariner C is Too Fat for my taste. |

I like the old sub better than the new, so I would get the new. Try and get it for the market price minus the cost of servicing.
But it's up to you. Both will be awesome. But the 9 year old should be due for a service, so keep the service time in mind also, might not be fun to buy a watch, and then directly leave it off for service.

Depending on the watch and what I knew about it and the owner, I'd choose the 9 year old Sub.
If the watch has not been abused, then 9 years is only two years out from the first recommended service, so as someone noted, figure into your costs a full-service immediately. All of this depends on the 9 year old Sub being a Sub Date, which is what most people mean these days when they utter the word Sub. If your talking a 14060, or any one of the classic Submariners, I might be more inclined to buy a new 14060M COSC. In fact, I would be more inclined to buy new.

Sorry guys, yes the old one I'm looking at is a sub date. Comes with outer and inner box and papers plus the original sticker is still on the back and its in really good condition.

Well the so called papers are just a warranty paper much like any other warranty paper you get with most products today. But as the watch in question is 9 years old, all it it now is a outdated bit of paper. Now when you get watch serviced at the RSC you will get service papers, with all the watches information on it and that paper will be a current valid two year warranty. And if you buy the older sub and that's the one I would buy, first thing to do after you have you have given it a full manual wind, is removed that case back sticker.

You haven't told us how much, becuase that does matter, and you have some bargining power, I would knock $600 off for a service or move on to another watch.

I have both and I prefer the new one...hands down, no question about it. In fact, after getting used to the Glidelock, I find it hard to wear the old style for any length of time.

I would go with a new watch. The old sub needs to be sent in for a service. Wouldn't it be nice to just purchase a new watch and put it on your wrist instead of buying the old watch and not seeing it for a couple of months while it is being serviced?

If it was me I would go for a preowned depending on the price. A 10 yr old sub isn't that old & if it needs a servicing it will come back as good as a new one.

New for me. It's worth the extra cash and piece of mind. As long as it's gonna be a keeper and you are not gonna flip it.
You probably wont get a discount from a UK AD so a no brainer would be to take the 0% finance. The question you should be asking is do you want the old sub or new ceramic. |

The price is £3000 might be able to get it for a bit less, its a private sale from a colleague of mine. I'm thinking about £500 for a service so all in £3500. Really cant decide what to do!!

As much as I like the new ceramics I say go with the used one. Then take the money you saved and buy another used piece down the road. (this is coming from a guy with an 11 year old submariner)

This is probably the most difficult decision I've had to make in a long while!! Buying a used one and using the cash saved to put towards another one is growing on me though!
