It's a celestial wonderland
If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, step outside tonight and look into the sky. You willl see an amazing planetary display. To the east is the full Moon. About 1/3 up the sky above the Moon is a very bright red object, the planet Mars. Looking to the west, you'll see two incredibly bright "stars" very close to each other. The lower object, the brightest of the two, is Venus, the upper is Jupiter. If you happen to look to the west just after sunset, you'll also see Mercury right at the horizon.
On March 15th, Jupiter and Venus will be in conjunction, lying just 3 degrees apart. |

That would have been something to see! Thank you Dr. Chitwood for your words on my thread.

Agreed, I was up in Flagstaff a few years ago, 7,000+ ft, and the stars were like nothing I had ever seen before, since I've mostly been a city dweller. Hey, that's a good name for the next Rolex

Here is a photo I took tonight looking to the west over the lake. Jupiter is the top planet, and Venus is the brighter lower planet.

Great shot with the town lights in it. Here is mine from last night. Was kind of hazy out so wasn't the best night. Looking better tonight so I am going to try for some more and some of Mars.

The stars
For those that own an Ipad there's a great app called Star Walk that will show you what you're looking at. Just aim it towards the sky and it shows you all the planets and other interesting things. It's one of those apps that's well worth the money IMHO.
Just thought I'd share. Jim Roberts |

Here is a telephoto shot of the planets taken at the same time with a Nikon D300 DSLR and 200mm lens. Unlike stars, which appear only as points of light, planets are round, although through the telescope last night, Venus was only about 3/4 of a sphere.
