well I did go classic first with a SUB then unique with a YM... 7+ years in between. im vetting my next purchase as i save

because my funds are tight it takes me time to save... also when i purchase it has to be different from my last. in this case black and Plat or light. i would love to add a jubilee maybe a datejust and an exp2 white face. but now the YM blue face has me intrigued. luckily for me no other rolex interest me..

I do have to say that I'm extraordinarily pleased with my first Rolex, and don't have a real desire for anything else on my wrist at this point. I think Sam FremStar makes good points - if you see yourself building a serious collection over time, perhaps start with a classically timeless piece like the Sub or DJ. However, if you want to put on something that will blow your socks off every time you put it on, well...

In all seriousness, if you can either buy a 'grail' piece now or delay gratification until you can save enough or comfortably afford one, it is fantastic to have your first Rolex be, as you say, a home run. The trouble I run in to is what watch would I get as a secondary or tertiary Rolex, and would it get wrist time? I love the 116610 LV, but just don't see it ever displacing my current watch. I love the Sky Dweller, but would require YG Romans, and even then I'm not sure it would displace my DDII often enough to warrant it's purchase.

Ahhh so much to think about...my current situation is that funds are tight as I'm still in school so I was thinking about getting rid of my Tag's and getting something used after some saving as a graduation gift to myself. This would obviously be something like Sub, GMT or Datejust....but sometimes I think to myself after reading Dr. JBA's story how it must feel to have your first Rolex be a grail. I'll keep you all informed. BTW I love the forum here I really enjoy it and all of you so thank you.

If you are still in school, I would recommend saving up and buying a nice SS GMTIIC or a Sub C.

Dr. JBA certainly has an amazing watch, but you have to remember that he graduated from medical school and then spent countless years of 80-100+ hour weeks to rise to the point in his profession where a solid gold DDII was an appropriate choice and a wonderful milestone of his accomplishments.

I am not sure that a true grail like a $35,000 DDII would be a wise move for someone just out of school and beginning to establish themselves in their chosen field.

Go for the SS and then enjoy it for a few years as you save for the grail. Just my $.02.

I do also think you're spot on the money regarding your advice to the OP. Speaking from my experience, I decided to wait until I'd gone through the countless hours of schooling, training, and making my business thrive to wait until I could purchase my Rolex. As such, it is as much, if not more, a symbol of all those years of work and achievement as it is a fine watch. Also, because I waited for so long and put so much work into it, wearing my Rolex is a tremendous source of pride and personal satisfaction for me.

What kind of physician do you see yourself becoming? Also, pray, PRAY for the full repeal of Obamacare - it will utterly ruin our careers if not fully removed from the legal code and, more importantly, cause untold undue suffering and premature, possibly preventable death.

Leaving that subject, good luck with your schooling and, during residency remember that it's all worthwhile.

The whole Obamacare thing does scare me and it saddens me that all I wanted to do with my life was be a physician and before even getting started this nonsense will make it much harder than just doing my best for the patients.

Let me take 1 post as a reprieve from horology and speak ever so briefly about that which pays for my time piece(s). I absolutely love my field. Anesthesiologists play absolutely critical roles in patients' care and are involved in eminently improving their quality of life. While most of us have very nice work/lifestyle balances, we have an incredible amount of responsibility - a person is never closer to death than when they are under anesthesia. Good luck with whatever you choose, but I must strongly recommend anesthesia to you. I love my work, how I work, and when I work.

Regarding your final sentence, I do not think you know just how correct you are. Right now, the main hospitals I cover are implementing Electronic Medical Record keeping, which sounds like a wonderful idea to people ignorant of the practice of medicine. However, electronic record keeping is not designed to help physicians and healthcare workers improve access to vital patient information. Rather, these records are designed to break down decisions regarding diagnosis and treatment into quantifiable chunks of data. These quanta are used to create decision trees and algorithms that, I fear, will ultimately be used to direct medical and surgical management towards the cheapest possible alternative, rather than the alternative most likely to improve an individual patient's quality of life.

Just today, as I was observing all parties involved in an operative procedure, I was sadly befuddled at how much difficulty was unnecessarily added to taking care of my patient - so much attention and effort directed towards computer screens and away from the person rendered unto near death, cut wide open, with innards exposed. I fear for medicine, but more I fear for all who will need our help and yet are having their lives jeopardized by the PPACA.

Enough, and back to watches!!

I wanted a Sub since I was a kid but figured that since there are so many out there, it might makeer for one from a highly respected seller. me a target. Instead, I went for the low key Polar Ex2. I've mulled over the Ex2 for quite a while and recently pulled the trigger on one.

Hi nice picture you have there. IMHO the polar is not a low key watch. I find it very stunning on my wrist! my only gripe with it is with the clasp being too thin. Other than that, it's perfect!

You'll soon be matching (pray you don't have to scramble!). As a resident, a grail Rolex isn't really a wise choice. Stick with a classic SS Sub. It won't be very long before you can get whatever else makes you happy.

Unfortunately I'm not going into the match this year, I'm about to start third year just planning ahead since this is what I do during my study breaks. Sometimes I dream of saving and waiting until I am an attending or when the practice takes off an just going all out and buying an awesome piece, but then I don't want to wait and think of getting something SS and building a collection.
