The sky thing... The Rolex Eye

After all the anticipation and the unveiling and the sad faces and the remarks... I think i know why i dont like it.

It reminds me of an eye! The numerals are the veins, than the circle, the iris, than the pupile, wide open... The eye is tired, looking down in shame... This is the Rolex Eye! And i dont like the look of this eye!

Am i the only one who caught that , tired, embarased look in the Rolex Eye?

Dude, put the crack up. Sky-Dweller looks A-ok to me....favorite? No. But a cool watch that's a real step up for Rolex in terms of technical audacity.

Finally Rolex starts to push the envelope and does something innovative as integrating the bezel into the movement along with an annual calendar and a GMT, and everyone is talking about what it looks like and the cost. Integrating the bezel ring into the movement is as groundbreaking as a waterproof watch or adding a date to watch, both Rolex accomplishments. Not too many are talking about that.

Many of the same people who are making the comments about the Sky-Dweller are raving about the Tudor. Maybe Rolex should just make cool looking watches with ETA movements for those folks. Heck maybe they would be best served with quartz watches.

I have to say, I'm disappointed by the reaction. I think it's great that Rolex are moving into new territory, but I think there is a vocal group on here who would prefer if Rolex regressed 40 years

I'm one of those who prefers most of older models (there are exceptions), but I also recognize that Rolex must compete in the marketplace against stiff and trendier competition.

The only constant is change, so when you see a model you like, it's best to make your move.

Rolex may change and in the last decade there may have been more than some like, but honestly, Rolex doesn't change so fast that most can't get the watches they want before the "curtain falls."

And also, there is always the used market to take up the slack.

Absolutely - we have to remember that so many of the models we take for granted now would have been radical and revolutionary at the time, and, had enthusiasts fora existed at the time, I'm sure there'd be similar resistance "A watch that you wear on your wrist? Preposterous!"


We're lucky enough that Rolex have produced most of their models in significant enough numbers we can get hold of most models from the past 30 years or so, and the range is big enough that there's usually something for everyone. But Rolex absolutely has to keep inventing and redesigning otherwise they'd become a relic. The Sky-Dweller and the Yacht-Master II, regardless of looks, are a big statement of intent from Rolex - they're still being innovative, and coming up with ideas that haven't been used before, all packaged up with Rolex's simple user interface. This is a level of watchmaking we haven't seen from Rolex for a long, long time, and they're going after the big haute horology boys - Rolex are going to make high-end complication watches robust and wearable. That's no bad thing, and I think we might well be entering another golden age of Rolex...

The Sky Dweller debate can go on for days, months and years BUT the bottom line is that it is a huge advancement from the movements that Rolex usually offers.

Not only that, but like the YM2 I think they will sell every piece they make (which hopefully is not too many )

You may not see one in the flesh, but they will be out there with the rich and famous.
