I don't know why I didn't realize this sooner.
I recently went to my AD and tried on an Explorer I in 39mm with the matte dial (214270). I was very surprised how much I really liked how this watch looked on my wrist. It just looked perfect. I'm surprised because I like larger watches as well and didn't think I'd love a 39mm sport model. Also, modern Rolex watches just haven't caught my fancy, so I've pretty much written them off and started pursuing vintage pieces. I'm not a huge ceramic fan and I sold my IIc. Don't get me wrong, they are beautiful, but I just like the older cheap aluminum insert models more. I was reading my Rolex book and I saw a picture of my grail. A 3/6/9 Submariner. Then it donged on me as to why I like the 39mm expy so much…

Yep.... that's why the 3/6/9 Sub is also known as the Explorer dial Sub.....
But I'd much rather pay for the Explorer as the 3/6/9 is veeeeeeerrrrryyyyy expensive..... I tried one on in Burlington Arcade a while back and from memory (after I'd picked my jaw up from the floor), it was circa £120k .... may have been more but I'd stopped listening by then and was just trying not to drop it..... |

To state the obvious Mik...I'm also thinking that Expy resembles the Panerai layout. Three, 6, 9 plus dial markers...and since you are Mr. Pam ;-)

Be very careful. Donging can be hazardous to your well-being. I'm a big fan of the 214270, too, although, I'm devoted to my 114270.

Its the plainess of the 39mm Explorer that,to me anyway,is the appeal of this lovely watch. I like them a lot,as it's an inbetween of a Sport and a Dress watch.

Flirting is right. Can't do any buying at this time unless I sold. Let's see if this 214270 sticks. So far I can't stop thinking about it for 3 days. Need another 27 days to make sure. Then 1 year to convince the wife!
