Availability of new GMT II?

Hi Everyone,

Anyone have any idea when the supply of stainless GMT II ceramics will catch up with demand?

Do you think they will still demand full msrp for a while?

Just trying to figure out if I should pull the trigger on one that is arriving in 2 weeks at full price from an AD. Other AD nearby says December before they will have one.

I was lucky to get a discount on mine. But I would pay full price for it. I went to my AD with cash ready to pay full price when they got it in.. I jokingly asked for a discount, they said ok.

The watch is great, I would pull the trigger on it if its the one you want!

Hard to tell when it will be readily availible, but it seems that many here have it already.

Thanks everyone. I have had the same Pepsi GMT on my wrist since new in 1982. The new GMT II is really sharp from the pics I have seen. I have tried on the ceramic TT but, I have a black faced Daytona TT already and don't need another TT sport watch (ok I do but.....). I just like the look of the new stainless GMT II's so it is the stainless that I am after. My AD tried to tell me that the stainless ones are an "allocated" watch. When I asked what she meant, she said it is just like the Daytona. Now, I've been around long enough to know that I usually see cases full of the stainless GMT's in the past and Daytonas come in one or two a year at most AD's. I just figured it is because they are new and demand is high and supply is trying to catch up.

As far as the Charlotte, NC market...

Before I purchased mine last week, I checked with all the ADs in the metro area of over 1 million and combined had only received and, of course, sold about 10 since they came out in June.

As far as allocation, I don't think so. Even though none of the new SS GMTs ever made it to the case, they was also not a waiting list. It was always like "you can have the next one that comes in if you put a deposit."

So I think you should have no real trouble securing one, just don't expect to get a measurable discount.

The 116710 is starting to show up in the display cabinets in my area. No breaks yet, but give it time.

Thanks Mike, I do plan on keeping it. I stopped letting the AD's tell me years ago what they would give me for it if I traded it in. I'm sure it is quite a bit more than the $700 I paid for it new in '82

I just picked up the new SS GMT last week and I love it!!

The ADs really don't know the real supply situation yet. They are fed BS from their Rolex rep. Just spend a little time on this forum and you will know much more than your AD.

Also, I think many of the Rolex collectors don't know about it yet. Of course, we all do because we are currently researching Rolexs. I think many collectors and ADs really don't yet know of the attractiveness of the new GMT. I got mine from a small AD who happened to have one in stock. They had to transfer it from another store. After I talked to the sales rep about it, she made some phone calls to some of their good customers and had several offers on my watch in the event that I did not come through.

I checked with several ADs in Charlotte and pretty much got the same story. They are in demand and they really don't know when they will be getting their supply of the GMT (116710).

I paid MSRP ($5950), got a 5 year warranty, the first major service free, and a $500 store credit. This is standard incentive with this AD. I got a good deal, but nothing special, only their standard deal.

If you have determined for sure that this is the watch for you and you are prepared to buy it now, then DO it. Put a deposit on the one they have coming in. Once the AD really finds out the demand for the new GMT, they may offer it to one of their long-term customers.

It also depends on the relationship you have with the AD. If you a newbie like me and know you want this watch, you may have to put a deposit down or pre-buy to ensure you will secure it.

Out of curiosity, who performs the first service? Is it by the dealer or RSC?

Dealer. They have a "certified" Rolex watchmaker.

I, myself, am not sure what to make of this, but they tell me that the service is the same as the RSC. I plan on confirming exactly what they do in the service. However, they assure me that they only use genuine Rolex parts and are authorized to work on them.

Any thoughts?

My GMT circa 1982 has had 5 services over its life. The first two were at two different AD's with certified Rolex techs. They never quite got it adjusted corectly and I could not get the date to adjust without advancing the time too. In other words they could not get it to fuction in the 'change the date only' detent of the crown extention. When I moved to Dallas I figured it was easy to just take it to the RSC there. They not only had it keeping the best time of its life but they also had it looking perfect. It was polished and shiny where it was supposed to be and brush-finished where it was supposed to be. It always came back looking new from the RSC. Not so at the AD. Since I picked it up personally there, I chattd with them about the difference between their service and and AD's. They told me that a major difference was that Rolex called for many different and specific types of oil depending on what part was being lubed. They said most AD's just use whatever watch oil is on the bench for everything. Based on experience, the Dallas RSC is the only place I send mine and my wife's Rollies.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to do more research about their service. I may end up using RSC just to make sure she comes back as new.

Where in TX are you? I was at my AD Tuesday getting my SD and he had just sold his SS GMT-C over the weekend. He told me he put in another order to his rep. and should get it next week (Wed. if I would guess). And yes, you pay full retail for THAT watch still...

I'm in Houston. Thanks to you guys, I put a deposit down on the one that is coming in. It is actually out of state so my discount is the tax savings. Promised the dealer I would not say where since they are supposed to sell locally.

I paid full msrp, I didnt even ask for a discount nor did I expect one. The watch is worth every penny. It hasnt come off my wrist since I bought it and I am neglecting all my others.

I would definitely get that checked out. I've had no one but my RSC touch mine since I bought it and as far am I'm concerned, no one else will touch it! Their service is impeccable and as has been said many times before - if they stuff something up on your watch - they'll replace the part, no questions!

The free service offered was not a determining factor in my purchase, and I have 5 years to actually use it. That being said, I plan on confirming the expertise of the service. What I know so far is that they use genuine Rolex parts and are "certified." Whatever that means.

Oh, and welcome Moose! Get the ceramic NOW!!! They are so new that mine is the first one that my RSC has seen - even the ones they worked on when they trained on the new movements were prototypes. You should see them all come out and ogle it when I go to see 'em. LOL
