Thinking of a Cellini Danaos
I have a sub with date and I'm considering the Danaos as a dress watch. I have found a used one that someone is sell and it seems like a good deal. I'm having a hard time figuring out the date. The watch store says that this watch came out 2 years ago yet the serial number starts with a "k" which puts the date in 2002?
What would a good price be on a used one in good condition? Also, how much do you think it would be to replace the leater straps? Thanks!! Jason |

Welcome to TRF!
I would need a pic to tell what price we are looking at. But I would guess that a good condition example (2nd hand example) should go for around 2,200 US $. A strap original from Rolex including buckle would be around 1,000 US $ (since the buckle is 18 kt. YG or WG). As far as I know, Rolex Cellini serial numbers and Rolex Oyster serial numbers do not correspond with eachother.

Jason,
The Cellini line is a good choice for a dress watch.. They are manual wind, so you don't ever have to worry about power reserve, was I active enough, what if it runs down, etc., questions.. If you want to replace the leather strap with a Rolex one It will cost dearly..But there are plenty of good quality straps out there for much less....say $100-200 for very high quality Hirsch leather or crocodile. These things run from $5-7k when new.....I would expect from 50% to 75% of new price for a 2002 model depending on condition... |

Thanks for the input. I don't have a great picture of it although I saw it in person. The face was in great condidtion. The band was warn but mostly on the underneath. The MSRP new is 7450 but I think I can get it for 4000. It has the box and papers.
Since you said that the serial numbers are differnet for cellini, were can I go to find out the year? Jason |

Jason,
You're going to need a paper trail to pick up the date, or Rolex will have to give you the initial sales date.... I havn't heard that Cellini 's were numbered differently. However, Cellini, and other refs, including solid gold models, do not sell quickly. Also, there is no hurry to ship them from the factory until there is an order. A "K" stamped case would only mean that is when the case was stamped... It could be a year or more before it left the Rolex factory, and it could be another year or so before it is sold and the warranty is actuated and it is called a new watch... So, it is possible a "K" serial number may have been first sold in 2005.. . |

This is a picture of the watch.
They can be had brand new for just over $4,000 so I would be inclined to offer $2500-2800 if I were you.

Here is a link to the picture. It is not the one that is pictured above. I seem to think that this version is no more then 2-3 years old? I don't think it was made before that. Anybody who can confirm would be great.
It is white gold. http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=...b&x=0&y=jp1wq8 |
