Market Value For A 1675?

Hey all.

After deliberating for some weeks about a new/newer model Rolex, and not actually buying anything, I've finally realized why--I really love the vintage Rolex models. As much as I would love to buy a newer 16610, or 16710, there's something about the 1675's, and 1680's that draws me to them.

So as to my title post, what should I expect to pay for a 1675? Checking the Classifieds forum, prices seem to be all over the place from $5600 to $3400. I understand that condition, original parts, patina, etc., plays a role in the price, but what would be a realistic price for a good condition 1675 on an Oyster bracelet?

Your opinions on this is greatly appreciated, especially since I'm located in Canada, and may have to shop in America to find what I want.

For a nice condition original late 1960's-1970's 1675 on nice oyster bracelet expect to pay anywhere in the low to mid $4,000 range.

There are so many variables, but if you want solid retail pricing I always check with this site:

For a good clean example in the UK the cheapest you're going to pay is £3k or $4.5k.

No $3k 1675s here.

I am the original owner of my 1977 1675 with all the boxes and papers. I just turned down an offer of $5,500.00. There are hundreds out there with no owner or maintenance history and no original boxes and paper. Those you can buy for 3K-4K. What are you looking for? You get what you pay for. A complete service on one without any parts will run around $700.00. You must take that into consideration if the seller knows nothing about the service history.

if you see a good one for 3500 you cant go wrong. the new prices of these GMTC's from rolex are insane. i still think that the explorer 2s are a tremendous deal at about 3k for a quickset.

Thanks, Michael. That appears to be the median price range for these. Taking into consideration I'm not looking for a first year gilt dial, or pointy crown guards; but just a good clean 1970's example, that would seem to be a fair market price.

I have noticed that the UK is like Canada in that everything--watches, pens, and their various accessories--always sell for more than market value.

I know the UK has a higher cost of living, but I'm not sure why we see higher prices in Canada, except perhaps because so few examples turn up here, and many collectors would like to avoid cross-border shopping.

Thanks, Eric88. Averaging out completed eBay auctions gives that price range. I'm hoping to buy from the classifieds here, but the prices being asked can be a couple thousand apart for identical examples.

I'm fairly certain examples such as yours are few, and far between. As much as I like getting a watch from an original owner who knows the watches history, (as I did last month with my 16013) I'm not interested in paying an owner for the sentimental attachment they have to their watch.

Yeah, the Explorer II is also at the top of the list. I bought one new back in 1993, and had to sell it one year later.

I've been on the hunt for a 1990-1992 model. There's one for sale on eBay Canada, but the seller is convinced it's worth $5200

Here's a couple:

Steel and gold:

And here, the seller states right up front, this one is a beater:

I respect him for his honesty.

Based on those pictures, especially the Pepsi, you better add about $1,500 to your budget. The bracelet on that Pepsi is rough.....

Oh, yeah

I wasn't considering it, but presenting it as an example. I'm sure it can be cleaned up, and made presentable, but in that situation you might as well buy one in better nick.

I would say the opposite -they all sell at market value.

It's just that the market ( people ) in those places place a higher value on these items then say , US ( demand and supply )

I don't know about that. If you go to the Blower's Jewelers website, he has piles of GMT's--1675, 16750, and 16710. An entire page of them. So I don't think there is any shortage of these in the UK.

I think because prices for everything in the UK are higher, then the prices for pre-owned watches are as well. There is no difference between a USA based 1675, and a UK based 1675, except what the seller is charging.

Conversely, you're hard pressed to find a 1675 here in Canada, and only a couple of online dealers have examples, and they're both charging close to $6000 CDN.

I hear you bu I would still say its demand driven.

Blowers is not going to sit with that lot forever - so either they will discount or it moves.

Lot of things are cheaper in the US , but my theory is that ( besides the tax differential ) it can only be because that's what people are willing to pay. If Rolex sold no watches in Europe for a year or two , I am sure they would adjust the prices ( no matter how important the Asian markets are to them ). Same for cars etc.

Hello Paul, based on my experience with GMT's, which is one of my favorite Rolex watches, a nice 1675 from the mid to late 1970's can be found for around $4500 based on the watch having original parts and in good working order. You could go 10% either way in price though, based on the seller and condition of the watch.

A nice, complete 1970's GMT 1675 with the original warranty paper, box, booklets and accessories sell in the $6,000 range, and higher.

These figures are a guide, but deals can be found here on the forum and elsewhere. Prices can also be higher for a quality watch. As you noted in your original post, there are many factors which need to be considered before you purchase.

The attached photo is my 1970 GMT 1675.

Good luck.

Thank you, springer

It's surprising how the prices have risen on the 1675, and 16750, and matched 1680 price levels. The old Subs always used to outpace the GMT's, but they're getting to be neck-and-neck.

The prices are closing in, but the Submariner is still a little more expensive in most instances.

I know I'm in the minority here but I have no problem with the 1675 luminova service dial. I've got 2 1675s, one having a service dial, and I wear it most often. I should note that while I love the soft cream patina color, I personally don't get the attraction of flaking dials, faded dials and corroded hands. This is certainly personal preference, and I repeat that I know I am in the great minority here, but I like the clean aesthetics and the night visibility of the service dials and they are usually hundreds cheaper. Just as long as they are authentic Rolex. Now I'm ready for my beating...

That's fair enough. When I had my 5513 serviced by Rolex Canad in 2000, and mistakenly accepted a new service dial, when I got the watch back I didn't hate it--I was disappointed, but I liked it. But today if I have the choice, I would definitely prefer an older dial on a 1675, but wouldn't think twice about buying a 16750 with the newer style dial.

These are good first hand cuff. 1675s are special.. when you see the right one.. grab it!

Good luck there,

Thank you, Fred

Right now my main concern is a good dial, and a case that hasn't been polished to death. If everything else is a bit rough, I know a service by Rolex Canada will bring to nicer condition. They do excellent polishing, and a set of replacement hands, and a new bracelet would be an option as well, simply because Rolex Canada does return old parts.

I have been to every watch show I can possibly go to this year and have not seen any nice cheap 1675's. The cheapest I have seen are on the forums. For all those that think prices are high I suggest to go to an IWJG show and see what they are asking at the show. Most dealers there are over 5k for an average 1 at best

Wow. Thank you for that info, Nikos. I've been to a few of the Toronto NAWCC events, and sellers there tend to be on the high side, but not like you've described.

It's becoming clear that the classifieds here are my best bet.

Good luck with your search Paul, it took me over a year to find the right one and I found it here on TRF. I certainly wasn't the cheapest 1675 I'd seen but it was love at first sight and well worth the hours put in to find.

Thank you 1675-David

In collecting the only thing better than the find, is the search!
