My father had a massive collection! When he passed away I vowed to take my favorite one and leave the rest to my half brother. May I ask what the allure is? I never understood it!

Must be a Midwestern thing like Terry Redline art.

My father has some very old decoys he has collected and keeps them in his den as art. They are different along with other antiques he has such as old shotgun shell boxes from the 1950's, an antique horse saddle, etc. Why do people collect anything? Because it stirs in them some interest from something or sometime in their life.

As has been said, some are pretty darn expensive too!

Not sure what the allure is for a
full blown collection, other than the fact that many are valued at thousands of dollars:-) I just happened to run across two and bought them because I thought they would look good in our lake house. ha

I'm no expert, in fact I know nothing about them, but wouldn't mind seeing some pics.

Yep. I'll just stick with my two ducks and keep collecting Rolexes. :-)

Some of the biggest names in old decoys are Jack Eppel, the Mason Decoy Company, Mark McNair, Charlie Joiner, Miles Hancock, the Ward Brothers. Of newer ones Delbert Cigar Daisey.

I've been told that one of mine could be an Elliston that someone repainted, which evidently really hurts the value.

Send them to Bob Ridley and he will keep them original.

What I know about them fits in a thimble except they are a big deal around the Chesapeake Bay and as said old ones by famous makers are big dough.

Very nice. I wouldn't mind having a few myself. I am a waterfowl hunter so that is why they would appeal to me.

I did some research and if they are pre-60's and hand carved they have some value at the decorator level...maybe $50-150 depending on quality and condition regardless of the artist
