Spotted a 1655 Explorer II in Starbucks....
Noticed the watch and complemented the guy who had it.
He had no idea what I was talking about at which point I tried to explain the significance of the watch (he had an orange hand model). He still didn't seem to care but admitted it was around 30 years old. I then told him how much those watches tend to go for from dealers and on auction... He didn't seem to pleased that I announced that in the middle of a Starbucks. Oh well haha.. Damn I want one. |

You should offer him $8000 and ask him to get a new watch, not worth keeping a 30yrs old watch

I agree 110% boss!
But of course Mitch I was only joking! The 1655 is the only Rolex reference that matters to me and I am just happy to have the opportunity to own one! :smokin Thank you very much Dan!

I've been. On the receiving end of that before. As a rule I never comment on a strangers watch.
I was at a restaurant one afternoon, having dinner with a friend. We were having a very heated and extremely private conversation when this kid in his late teens got up from a few tables over and walked up to our table. We weren't being loud at all and no one could hear what we see talking about. The kid strolls up and starts asking questions about my 1675. He wasn't quiet about it either. I don't like that kind of attention in the first place and he couldn't have picked a worse time to interrupt me. One looked sufficed. I usually love to chat watches but with strangers in a public place you're gonna get what you get. Saying "Rolex" or "$xx,000" watch within earshot of other strangers isn't the best. I'd be excited too if I saw a 1655 out in the wild. Gotta pick your battles.

It's pretty rare I spot a nice watch. It happens once in a blue moon, I always resist the urge to say something. :) Well, except with Panerai, odds are the owner is at least a little into watches and both times I've complimented a Panerai wearer, they seemed genuinely pleased I even knew what it was. :)
Yesterday I was in the section of Gander Mountain. Guy was looking at a nice double barrel SG. Couldn't help but notice a sparkly green ceramic Sub on his wrist 116610LV. But I make an extra effort not to mention someone's Rolex while they're holding a 12 ga. :) |
