Need advice regarding plants

Greetings TRF,

I've been thinking lately and I thought it would be very interesting to get to know plants a bit better. Basically, I thought that since I'm going in my very first apartment soon it would be a great decoration but mostly something I would be able to take proper care of.

Having said that, I would like to know if anybody on TRF has some knowledge about plants or a couple of flowers, perhaps some of you have a couple of suggestions to give me regarding the types I should take a look at and things I should know prior to my purchases. As well, I would gladly appreciate pictures to help me figure out how they look like (that is, if anybody has a suggestion).

To give you a better idea of what I'm looking for, here are a couple of things I had in mind and what I really want:

- The plant has to be an interior one, it has to be able to live in a living room or a bedroom.

- My apartment will have quite a good amount of light in it but I would also like plants who can survive in rooms that are a bit darker.

- If possible, I'd like something that has an original (or almost kind of odd) look (so far I've been looking at various types of cactus, regular plants with special looking leaves and carnivorous plants but other suggestions would be appreciated).

- I can take care of plants but I would prefer something that doesn't require a lot of fertilizers and other products. I'd prefer something you need to water and perhaps change from a pot to another from times to times.

Thank you for reading, I'm looking forward to reading your advice and thoughts!

My experience is more with outdoor plants and landscaping, but I would tell you to find a good nursery. Out here in California a good nurseryman/woman would belong to the California Association of Nurserymen. These are experts in indoor and outdoor plants. Also, one of these caliber nurseries will also have a selection of unusual and interesting plants.

Well I have two nurseries around my house and I've been to one of them today, they had quite a nice selection and some of their plants were looking very good but I wanted to make sure those plants wouldn't die the next day if I bought them. I always make sure I know what I'm getting before purchasing something.

Dragon tree plant, you pretty much have to go out of your way to kill one.

Aloe plants are nice too.

I thought about Aloe plants and am thinking about getting one, they do look nice.

As for the dragon tree plant, it looks nice but I'm thinking it might be too big, I am thinking about something that could fit in a small pot (perhaps the biggest would be a medium size pot that would fit on a table). Is it possible to re-plant it in a smaller pot?

I think if you buy your plants at Lowes they offer a 1 year guarantee against dying. If they die, take them back for a replacement.

They actually look quite nice, I prefer regular plants to flowers but they do have some beautiful colors.

Well the thing is that I live in Montreal, therefore I do not believe we have Lowes in here (I've never heard of it anyway). Besides, as interesting as this offer may sound I'd rather buy a plant and make it live than being covered for my mistakes, I prefer to learn and succeed than practicing with plants and exchanging the ones I kill for others (that's just my humble opinion).

Hence my thread and the reason why I didn't buy any today.

A favorite of mine is the Ming Aralia. It looks like a beautiful Asian tree and is in fact sometimes used for bonsai.

It does fine in normal indoor conditions.

The pet store where we got our hamster has a one-week free replacement guarantee....

Carl, I got all excited when I read your thread title, but when I saw that you're needing info about house plants, the excitement turned to.... crestfallen...ness. I have never had luck with house plants and really haven't even tried in years. I had some kind of really tough ivy in a pot on my desk during my working days... but I don't even remember what it was called.

Useless. Sorry!

Get a Phaelenopsis Orchid....I am not a plant person, but when I was growing Orchids they were the BEST and they thrive no mater what....The Phals are lower light, need water like a bromeliad. They are VERY easy if you just water them and leave them alone.

I get your point Lisa but I must tell you that my father works outside on his garden spots (with me as his slave, that is! ), therefore we are equipped in terms of outdoor plants. The thing is that I prefer to take care of something in my house so I know they will be easy to move if I have to go to another apartment or if anything happens. Besides, I do not have a garden spot where I'm going and I'd like to have plants I can take care of for (almost) the whole year.

After mine either died or attracted these tiny little flies, I got a couple of fake ones for indoors. Can't tell the difference.

Yes, the tiny flies. I was going to mention the little buggy factor.... Last winter we brought in my daughter's potted lemon trees (she raised them from seed from a store-bought lemon two years ago) and soon there were swarms of those tiny things... crawling around on the curtains and furniture... ick.

Yes Carl, be careful of the flies, especially if using your teleport machine, otherwise you might end up looking like this.

It's Jeff Goldblum(or could be Carl, as we've never seen his face, but we've had to read about 500 of his posts a day)
