If you have all the original papers, cards and box for the watch, I would keep the original dial and carefully store it so you have all the parts to the original watch as you bought it. I guess I would save it either way; you could always get papers for it from Rolex, so it doesn't hurt to have the original parts.

Which way would be better? well, thats based on opinion.

You can do it "right" and send it to Rolex Service Center and request that white dial. Rolex will usually not replace dials unless its an upgrade (from plain to mop/diamond or if you note that you have a hard time telling time). In your case the whole story about not being able to read it well would work ok because its champagne and could "blend in". You know it will be done right and you can save the receipt for "proof" later on if you ever decide to sell the watch. HOwever, you won't get to keep the old dial, they will take it "on trade-in".

You can go the route of having it done through an independent watchmaker and get to keep the original dial, but then you have that risk of not getting an OEM dial put in, etc etc.

Thanks for the info guys,

I believe if I exchange the dial, I would get a significant price cut from RSC...But I really want to know how big is the price cut that I would get? If it's big enough maybe it would be much much better if I exchange the dial....

And is it true that RSC that won't change the dial unless it's an upgrade?

Thanks again for the help Guys....

Yes. Service Center won't unless you are upgrading or if you tell them you can't see yours well. In which case they will offer 3 basic colors if I remember correctly. I used to work for an AD and we ran into this "trouble" all the time.

I would personally like to keep the old one and change them from times to times when I feel like it but you will have to "work" harder to have it done. You will need to find a good watchmaker who will be able to change the dials when you feel like it and you will need to find a good seller to get an original dial. If this is impossible than you can ask Rolex to put a white dial on your Day-Date but I believe they may tell you that you need to have your watch serviced in the process (if they feel like a service is in order) and they will keep the champagne dial.

There is only 1 dial in the world that came as original equipment on your watch, do you really want to trae it away?

Hi Glenn,

Sometime after looking at the same dial for years, I am tempted to be able to look at something new on my DD's face :)).....and as long as it is an original Rolex dial, I think it wouldn't be a problem right?

If I don't keep the old dial, will this make it more difficult when it comes to selling my DD in the future?

Anybody can tell roughly the price of the new dial for DD?

Thanks again guys....

switch it, it wouldnt be a problem. I would however keep the dial and buy the additional dial and have it installed. It's nice to be able to stich back and forth between dials.

Yep, keep original (which is noted on papers) for posterity, buy another, and make friends with a watchmaker for the switch. Don't buy from Rolex directly, we have sellers here who deal in parts -- get to know the FS section, and probably someone like S. Mullholland (I think I spelled that correctly).

Both dials are pretty popular. If you had RSC do the swap I don't see the value being hurt at all. That said DD dials aren't that hard to source and it would probably be the same price if not cheaper to do it second hand. And you would have 2 dials. If you want to take the easy way just send it to Rolex if you don't care about keeping the dial. Many watches have the original dials swapped and it's not an issue for most buyers. If you don't have papers it really doesn't make a difference.

I will say I didn't know about the upgrade requirement. I actually thought if you had a standard dial Rolex wouldn't give you a MOP dial only the choice of another standard dial. That's good to know.

You're getting advice with a USA perspective and how Rolex USA does things. It may be possible that Rolex in Jakarta does NOT require that you give up one dial to get another and the Jakarta agent may well allow you to buy and install any of the DD dials they have in stock regardless of whether or not it's considered an upgrade.

Rolex rules around the world are different, or at least they were a few years ago. I know from personal experience that Rolex in Hong Kong was willing to swap a dial and hands without a full service and I received the old dial and hand set back. I've seen sellers post service invoices from Hong Kong where Rolex just did a case polish and cleaning or replace a crystal without the need for a full service...you'd never get that from Rolex USA.

So check with your local Rolex facility and you may be able to accomplish what can't be offered in the USA.

I much prefer the original dial, but a more helpful answer to one of your questions is that it cost $35 to exchange a dial here at an indy shop.

Icon5 day date display

see if your current watch has a white or off white day date display. If so the white dial might look odd with off white day date. just my 2 cents

I'd keep the old one in case you ever wanted to switch back.

Good luck sourcing your new dial.

Your watch appears to be somewhat older due to the small luminescent dots at the bottom of the batons (sticks). Be darn sure the newer dial you seek has the same feet, etc. I am no expert on swapping dials, many on TRF are.

That said, keep the original dial for sure. You might want to go back to it some day, and the next owner (if not an heirloom) might hinge purchase on having it.

Good luck - they are both classic and handsome options !
