Any long distance runner's w/a Rolex

Ok, don't shoot, I understand that Rolex watches are not designed for running, and moreover I should wear my quartz watches for running, which I currently do.

But, hypothetically speaking, if one were to use a Rolex for long distance running, which one would it be...? I spoke to an AD who indicated that the EXPII 39mm had been designed for serious movement/activity, with special case modifications for said activity. I had always thought that the EXPII was the same as a GMT MasterII, with a different bezel feature and less shiny case.

I run up to four days a week, 1 to 3 hours at a time, and yes, I'd wish I could wear a beater 16570 polar while I'm hitting the pavement....

It sounds like another typical AD BS
Just wear any Rolex and run

Rolex cases/ movements are bulletproof.

If I were to choose a watch for you it would be a ND sub :)

I have always run with mine about 1-3 hours every other day. I have had no problems with mine. I enjoy wearing them whilst running.

I have been very competitive in the UK running scene for a number of years and the only acceptable watch for running is some form of plastic lightweight watch; anything else would be a hinderance due to the movement and weight. I fully accept that you could however jog with a Rolex. I wear the Rolex or Breitling for anything else, unless it involves physical work that could lead to accidently damaging them, which I consider running may if it came loose.

I also compete and agree that anything other then a lightweight watch, polar or something else would only slow you down and be a hinderance as stated above..but if you had to wear a Rolex, go full gold for the optimal effect :) ;)

My watch I use to run needs to do more than tell time. I like to monitor my splits, distance, and heart rate. My Rolex can't do this.

Thanks for the feedback Simon. Perhaps I need to find a EXPII (Polar) beater watch w/out a bracelet. I could then add a lightweight rubber strap, then I am off to the races. This watch could double as my surfing watch. I have a buddy who regularly surf's with a Polar on a strap, it looks great on the water...and no sand in the bezel issues...

You certainly could run with a Rolex, but I'm not sure why you'd really want to. I did a half marathon a few weeks ago (and I run regularly), and my Ironman is always my watch of choice.

When you're wearing purpose-made relatively lightweight clothing, choosing a relarively heavy analog watch (with no specific timing features to assist with running) doesn't add up to me.

+1, to me an Ironman is the right tool for the job when running.

I run 2 miles at a time, so I'm not a long distance runner. I wear my GMTIIC when I go running.

The Milgauss is too heavy and it bangs around.

Any Rolex would handle the run just fine.

Ideally though, I couldn't see wearing anything but a plastic / rubber sports watch for distance running.

I wore my Sub running for a while - no issues. I run with the GShock now but just for the splits.

In what way are Rolex watches not designed for running? I would have thought any of the Rolex line up would be equally suitable, as long as you don't fall over and scrape the watch.

And yet another case of a AD talking through where the sun don't shine, all the Rolex movements except the chrono range are base on the cal 3135.

He may've been referring to the added protection of Incabloc and/or Paraflex shock absorbers present in the Exp models.

I jog with my SubC sometimes to warmup at the gym, gains about 2-3 seconds post session.

I would have thought the Daytona for its chronograph function.

Personally, I'll stick to my Garmin for my runs.

As a younger man I used to jog with my then Submariner (16800) daily, for years.

Never gave it a second thought, never experienced any issues.

I have worn a Sub while running when I was out of town and did not want to leave it in the hotel room but I think my G Shock is a much more practical choice as an everyday running watch.

Sounds like a sub ND on a rubber/nato strap would fit the bill perfectly!

Why wear a Rolex for running? G-Shock is much better or in my case the IPHONE to play music with cool running apps. I think people think way to hard about watches at times.

I too alternate from 10k to 5k. I could wear my Exp II but can't imagine using anything other than my Polar.

Garmin watch is the way to go. Leave the Rolex at home when you are running.
