If you could only have TWO- which ones?

My wife layeth the smacketh down. I have learned who wears the pants in this household.

She freaked out about my burgeoning watch collection, and told me to pare it down to 2 "nice" watches. I can have watches beyond that, but they'd have to be something along the Hamilton, Seiko price range.

And that was after I negotiated it up from just ONE nice watch - my wife just couldn't understand why I needed another watch beyond my beloved Sub. I actually told her " I want a nice watch to wear whenever the other one is in service!", so she said fine, you have have two.

So for now I have a Sub and a preloved DJ I just picked up. But it's fun to daydream. If you could only have two "nice" watches (Rolex or otherwise), which ones would you get?

The rub for me is that I have so much sentimental attachment to the Sub that watch is going NOWHERE. So basically I'd only have room to eventually trade out the DJ.

I agree, I think one is perfectly okay. I personally prefer the versatility of the 116509 Daytona but if money wasn't an issue, I would also get the 218239dd with diamond dial for playing dress up

I'd call that a predicament, but the majority of men live within such constraints.

Personally, I think a Sub and a DJ is a nice combination of watches to own and if I were to be in such a position, that's what I'd go with, but thank God I am not, because I'm not getting rid of my Explorer for love nor money.

That aside, it's a good question...I'm in the process of bringing my collection down to two watches plus a G-Shock...

My choices are:

- Sea Dweller 16600 (which I have already)
- Sub 116613 TT LB which I will be collecting on 4th December

I will be wearing the Sub for smart wear (work or social) and the Dweller for general wear (casual social, sport, mucking about in the field on the tractor etc). The beauty of this combination, is that if I'm going away for a few days where I will be both smart and casual, both watches will actually suit all scenarios. The G-Shock (new Rangeman, also collecting in December), will be used for hardcore drinking, building, or general mucking about.

When I'm older, I will likely trade the Sub for the Patek Rose Gold 5712 which is my grail watch...but it doesn't suit me yet, so need to wait a few years.

I really like the Day Date, but that doesn't suit my looks or personality...I think that all too often people buy watches they like the look of without giving thought to what they will look like on them!

What all this does mean, is that I will be saying goodbye to my limited edition Bremont MB2, my Baume and Mercier Riviera, and my Tag Microtimer, along with some other less good pieces...all very sad, but time to move on...

My wife is very good and I can buy whatever I want, but my motivation is simplicity...I don't like clutter, too many possessions, or anything that complicates life in any way without giving enough reward. My Rolex gets 95% of wrist time and as such, the other watches are just a complication (storage, insurance, servicing etc) that gives me a little bit of satisfaction once in a while. I need a bit of strange / variation, but not as much as I currently have.

I am lucky that I already have "my two" in my collection. Both are classics with plenty of heritage and no date to faff about setting.

The other bad thing about this for me is that I feel constrained to 1 brand. Cause if I look at another brand (I like Omega), then it snowballs and I start looking at other similar brands - IWC, Breitling, etc.

If I just focus on the universe of 1 brand (hopefully Rolex!) then it at least kind of keeps me focused.

^ This is how to put it into perspective. But the validity of that argument depends on your wife's tastes. Assuming she doesn't go nuts with jewelry and bags and shoes, this won't work.

Another way to circumvent this problem is for you each to have your own "play money accounts." From each paycheck, you each get $xxx to spend on WHATEVER YOU WANT. No permission is necessary. She can get all the mani/pedis and purses she wants, as long as she doesn't spend the house money, and you can get as many fine watches as you want with that money.

How it works with my wife and I is that we each have our own habits. She's a saver, and has thousands of bucks in her account, and she cries a little inside each time she has to spend HER money on something. Thank GOD it is not all in one account, as I'm completely opposite. I've only had more than $1,000 once in the 8 years we've been married, and it was after I'd sold a $650 watch.

OK, now to answer the question. The two fine watches I'd have would be a classic Breguet with the guilloche dial, roman numerals, and no complications. Not even a seconds hand. Yellow gold on a glossy brown strap of some kind. That'd be my dress watch.

For my casual watch, I'd probably have a modern Datejust in stainless, smooth bezel, blue dial, roman numerals.

Watches in the Seiko price range would handily fill out the collection. I'm a member over at Poor Man's Watch Forum, and I think some of you might be shocked at how much watch one can get for under $1k.

For instance:

- a Vostok Amphibia for $75 shipped from the Ukraine. Great watch, and funky vintage design and communist styling.

- Bernhardt watches are great values too, and most (all?) of them have sapphire crystals. I have a Binnacle Anchor, which is about a $200 watch. Non-hacking, unidirectional automatic winding, hand-winding Miyota movement and exemplary build quality. The bracelet is Rolex class, and the case is designed so there is no gap between the strap and the case. The dial kind of resembles that of an Air-King with the Explorer numeral layout.

- A Seiko SKX007K driver is a fine example of the breed. When the "Hardlex" crystal gets scratched up, simply swap it out for a sapphire aftermarket one. With some patience, they can be regulated to run to COSC specs, on the wrist. (but maybe not in all positions) $200 watch. $100 crystal, maybe $50 labor.

My chosen 2 would be similar what you have. I would definitely have a sub and the second would either be a Datejust or Day-Date.

Could you try telling your wife you have to get your watches serviced 2 at a time?
