Advice please on a possible heat stain / mark.

Hi Guys / Gals,

Long time lurker here on TRF, enjoy my daily fix with great info and all things Rolex.

A little back story here first. Approx 3 weeks ago I called up Toronto RSC and mentioned that my fairly new Sub ND had aquired some minor flea bite dings on the opposite crown side, just on the lower edge.

This happened months ago due to my own carelessness, has bugged me ever since. To my releif the young lady at the RSC explained that I would be welcome to bring the watch in for a complimentary buff / touch up on the area affected.

Being the OCD kind of guy that I am, I was thrilled to hear this.

Brought the watch in , waited 40 minutes and voila , my watch appeared with those annoying dings removed ... again I was a happy camper.

On the drive home I noticed a very small dark area perhaps only 2 mm across, around the buffed area. This dark area ( mark) can only be viewed from a certain angle and in all honesty if you werent as eagle eyed you may never even notice it was there. Problem is I know its there ... lol.

So heres my dilema. RSC solved one problem for me but created a new one ( although minor ). After doing some research on here I have come to the conclusion that perhaps this a heat mark from letting the buffer sit to long in one place causing a heat build up.

I called RSC today and they said bring it in we will look at it and try to remedy the issue.

Question I have is would you just live with it and not risk further issues or get it re buffed by RSC and hope they can resolve this minor flaw.

No I wouldn't live with it. I have OCD also with my watches and it. It would bother the hell out of me. You spend enough for a Rolex. Let them make it right for you.

I agree, what would I do with a major "battle scar".

As far as pics go it really is hard to see only at a certain angle , besides hooking up the camera to the comp is a real pain lol.

Try a Cape Cod cloth on it first. It should remove any superficial stain without taking it back to RSC.

Don't worry, it'll be gone the next time you buff it for nicks in a few months. In fact after a few years perhaps most of the case will be gone giving you less to sweat about. HTH

Steelinox , it looks exactly like that. Faint yet noticeable.

Sink's got it, it's burn marks from dirty rouge on the wheel....the buffing wheel needs to be dressed and fresh rouge applied.

LOL - I'd take this guys advice and send it back in...it will take about 10 minutes to correct. It's not a metal issue with the case.

RSC are meant not meant to create new problems! Take is back, otherwise you'll be forever noticing it every time you look at your watch!

Having had a chat with a well respected TRF member a few moments ago its come to my attention that this issue may be inherent to some cases and is in fact a steel flaw that perhaps only rears its ugly head when polishing/buffing comes into play.

Being very small and almost unoticeable Im going to live with it.

Steelinoxs photos illustrate perfectly my issue, however my case only shows this problem in one very faint area ... what am I getting my shorts all in a knot for? lol

I'd still ask the RSC about it. You never know, they just might replace the case for you depending on how persuasive you are. You never know until you ask! The longer you wait after receiving the watch back, the less that they may do for you. I mean, it wasn't there before you got them to fix it ...

I'd leave it alone. Its a Rolex sport model, not a holy relic. You won't even notice it after enough wear, and other scratches/scuffs start taking up residence on your case (in a good way).


The more RSC farks around with it, the more potential there is for other issues to pop up.

That's why I would have left it alone from the start but that's just me. There are going to be more marks on the watch on an almost daily basis! You can't obsess over them all! Enjoy the watch!!

IMHO think of it like your car. Brand new-flawless, but after awhile there will be inevitable little marks either from a bozo in a parking lot or just "stuff" in the air when driving at highway speeds.
