Downtown LA Jewelry District (newbie question, help please)
Hi, I am preparing to buy my first Rolex and I am a newbie here with a few questions for you guys please. On another thread, I saw a few people here recommend some shops in downtown L.A. that I have been checking out, such as Watch Empire, Mirage Watches, Levi, etc.
(See: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=169316) I went into one today, and I liked the watch, but not the color of the faceplate. So the clerk had a display case of hundreds and hundreds of faceplates, and he said he could interchange them for me. My question is...does that still make it an authentic Rolex if you take a piece from here and clip it onto a piece from there? Seems like it's become a hybrid of different assembled parts. Also, I don't even know how to spot a fake Rolex, let alone a fake faceplate. I am relying 100% on some recommendations I've seen on this board on that other thread at http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=169316. Any tips?...would a guy be insulted if I just ask "Is this real?" |

Given your limited knowledge on Rolex, I would recommend you buy from an AD or trusted seller right here on the forum. Any place that has any combination of dials and says they can swap it out for you, I start to question the reputuation of the store.

Is it an authorized Rolex dealer? If not, then rethink it.

Solid advice above
IMHO I would buy one (specially my first) that is 100% factory Original. With th papers reading/matching the watch. There are tons of thm out there, enjoy the hunt. Contact the trusted sellers here (some are in Cali and welcome face to face), I'm pretty sure they will have what you are looking for. Would you mind sharing what model it is?

Thanks everyone for the tips. The model i am looking for was an Oyster Datejust, (sorry if thats not accurate, i am stil learning) all steel without the gold two-tone. I prefer a white or blue dial, and when i mentioned that, he then showed me his other dials. If there are ADs on this forum, especially in L.A. that you recommend, I'd certainly check them out if you can provide a link? Oh, and i am looking for a used, as my budget is about $3 K. Thanks
