What species is this?

it was hanging outside the house we rented while on vacation on an island.... About 5 inches long (including legs, of course). Does anyone know what these are called?

If it was that large it was probably a golden orb spider, sometimes called a banana spider.
Harmless, but if you're afraid of spiders it would scare the bejesus out of you.

How do you know if the golden orb spider outside your window is hardcore?

It eats birds.

Nah, man - those spindly legs would wrap right around from underneath your foot and inject deadly poisons from all eight tips directly into your foot veins. Through your shoes and everything.
