Icon20 Winder recommendations....?

Hi all,

I am new to RTF and was hoping to draw on the groups extensive experience. I have anmold Steinhausen winder which is on it slast legs. i am looking for a dual wonder (possibly with additional watch storage) for my 16610 and soon to be arriving 116520.

My budget would be around 200-250 any guidance would be appreciated.

Many Thanks,
EJP

First, welcome to TRF!

I don't bother with a winder. Doesn't take long to reset and wind.

With the two watches you mention, my advice would be to save your coin.

Others love to use them and will have good recommendations I am sure.

Amazon has a large selection, I personally purchased the Diplomat Burl Wood. Good for a small collection (like mine)

Welcome to TRF,

I personally couldn't agree more with the idea of using your wrists (yes, even for perpetual calendars! ), watches have been made to be worn everyday and if they stop you'll just need to wind them up again (one of the best parts of owning mechanical timepieces in my humble opinion).

Brookstone has a dual and a quad that are fully programmable and very affordable.

My choice also. Keeps the procedure of changing watches that are pre wound so much smoother.

Without doubt the finest winders in the world today and most have two they are called wrist and what the watch was designed for.

Winders are a must for for multi complication watches if rotated.
Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.

Wrists to wind and fingers to reset work just fine--save your money.

X2 Winders are a huge waste of money. Why add wear and tear when they could be resting. As already stated, if you don't have a multi complicated watch, save your money.

Contrary to the naysayers, most prominent of whom are Peter and Ken, I happen to like to keep my watches on winders. I have 2 quad Brookstones (they also make a double and a single) and an Underwood single. All are excellent. The Brookstones are individually programmable for direction and TPD (turns per day) and they are amazingly quiet.

I used to have a couple of quad Steinhausens. There's a reason they are cheap. They are noisy and don't last very long. As for the watch wearing out if you keep it on a winder, my answer is that you will wear out long before your watch will.

I've been told by a reputable dealer in Boston that automatic watches are meant to rest and winders should not be used. He also said that the electric motors in winders can produce magnetic fields which can cause the hairspring to become magnetized causing premature failure and the need for more frequent servicing.

I've kept my watches on winders for over 10 years without any problems. Your dealer was blowing smoke; or was smoking something.

P.S. Welcome to TRF.

Not a huge fan of winders, would rather spend the money on watches. But would recommend Wolf Design for reliability at a reasonable cost...

I have heard some people say it wears them out sooner. Any truth to that or does having watches on a winder damage them in any way?

Hi everyone.
New here and actually... my first post was a question about winders. Unfortunately, I haven't a clue where my thread went.

All of the above mentioned winders are great. MY question is... when you buy a winder on amazon for $34.95 and its all plastic and will last 12-24 tops.. quality of construction aside. Can it damage the watch ? ie: magnets in motors etc affecting watch.. This in comparison to winders that cost 20 times more.

Just curious as I need a new Winder for the explorer II I just picked up.
Thanks

I picked up a Modalo winder from Amazon which is around the price range you mentioned. Looks great, has storage for non-automatics and has two winders which both fit two watches.

Just need to talk the missus into letting me fill it now!!!!!

Thanks Colt32,

But is there any value to my question ? Regarding the motors/magnets possibly damaging the watch as these are so so cheap.

I only keep watches that are difficult to set on winders such as perpetual calendars. Otherwise, I've never needed one.

It's a little annoying to see someone inquire about winders and half the replies saying, "You don't need one! Waste of money!" etc.

It's really all personal preference, I happen to hate winding my watch. I'm not alone in this. When I wake up to get ready for work, the last thing I want to do is give my watch 40-50 rotations and then set the time based off my phone or whatever - even if it's a 2 minute job, it's not something I personally want to do. So for people like me, yea, a winder is nice and even necessary.

So, while I respect some of you do not use a winder, simply do not post in the thread. It is a bit childish to continually butt in saying it's not necessary - of course it's not necessary, but if he wants one, he wants one.

And it does not wear out your watch as you can program them to wind for 8 hours a day, or a specific amount of rotations per day, so it allows your watch to rest even if it's on the winder.

X2 - thank you sir - perfectly stated.

Winders aren't necessary? Neither is your TV remote control - get off the couch and change the channel. It's a convenience thing - how can you 'against it'.? Don't want one, fine. Be against it - strikes me as odd.

Why own an automatic watch in the first place if you tend to let it go dead and then consult another clock to reset it? Get a quartz and go years - now that's convenient.

Oh yeah - 650 TPD, bi-directional - Rolex setting.

I don't care much for watch winders... imho, if you don't have a watch with many complications, there's really no need for a winder. Just wind the watch, set the time (and date if it has a date feature) and you're ready to go...

Wind those watches sitting idle in the safe say once a month just to keep the oils going (and even that is not THAT important anymore since modern synthetic oils don't congeal as quickly and the old mineral ones did)..

Also, imho you often pay way to much for winders that are basically just cheap Chinese mechanism in an expensive box.
