Have I Bought A Dodgy Tudor
Hi
Wonder if you can help. I bought a lot at auction (an auction house not internet) which included a watch which they claimed to be a Tudor wristwatch. Having picked it up and worn it for a few days I really like it and rather than sell it on thought I would keep it and do a bot of research. I now kind of wish I hadn't! While the watch runs perfectly and looks nice, I see that it has a model and serial number on outside of the back plate is that wrong? Also having looked up the model number (7958) I see that most people seem to think it is a fake one. So I guess my question is, do I have a nice fake watch that I can wear and enjoy for what it is or is it genuine and maybe worth more than I paid for? I am fairly certain that the older Tudor models DID have the serial and model numbers on the back plate the way yours does. But I am not sure about the numbers AND the "BY ROLEX GENEVA * ORIGINAL OYSTER CASE" simultaneously. I am not an expert, but if I had to guess, I would say you are okay.

Thanks for looking, certainly hope so. Having had a look around a bit more it looks identical to an Oyster Athlete but without the word athlete on the dial. Will be taking it in to be serviced and checked.

I'm not an expert (or Journeyman) on this type either but it looks OK to me. Serial puts it in around 1960 - I've seen others around on the net similar to that. The 6 is a little funky

...watch looks good...
...looks like one of the earliest Tudors.
...as stated, the early ones had the mdl and sn on the case back. ...because of the additional stampings, I can only surmise that it was transitional at the time the wording was being added to the case backs. ...it should be fine! ...and, WELCOME to the BEST Rolex Forums on the planet!! ...enjoy your stay. |

I took it around a few vintage watch shops this morning and had an incredible array of valuations. They ranged from people saying that it wasn't their thing but the would give me £100 for it to they are not buying Rolex at the moment but it has to be £800+.
If anyone has any idea of value or is interested in purchasing it please do give me a shout. |

Not trying to sound un-friendly, but how did you go from "Having picked it up and worn it for a few days I really like it and rather than sell it on thought I would keep it and do a bot of research. I now kind of wish I hadn't!" to "If anyone has any idea of value or is interested in purchasing it please do give me a shout." in 2 days?

OK no problem at all. As mentioned in the original post I bought it at auction as part of a lot in a local sale that included a number of items and the Tudor which was not the reason for bidding. I successfully bid for the lot and have buyers for the other items. I also questioned in the original post whether I now have a fake that I can enjoy wearing for what it is or indeed something that is correct and therefor worth more than I paid for it. As I have now confirmed that it is correct I would prefer that someone who knows watches far better than me have it an enjoy it.
No big conspiracy, I am sure that as specialist collectors you get a lot of people being underhand with you, I just want to make the most of a general lot I bought at auction. |

Email the watch details and photos to several retail buyers of Tudor Rolex watch and see what prices they quote, the mean price ( half way between the highest and lowest, would be a good ball park figure i assume as to its average value ) Always remember a collector looking for that exact watch would likely pay more. Good luck
