SS vs TT

I've been looking through the watches for sale for some time and find it high addictive. Most disturbing is that my first watch hasn't even arrived yet and I am already scoping out which Daytona I should buy (probably everose gold). Anyway;

I have noticed a trend through the watches for sale. SS seem to go up slightly in price or decrease very little, TT seem to lose twenty percent of their MSRP right from the get go and gold, well, gold doesn't seem to do very well at all, even the white gold sub which is one of the most amazing watches out there.

I don't really have a question about this but wanted to throw it out there for discussion. It may even be my imagination.

Well they generally stay around where they can be purchased new. Little to no discount on SS. More of a discount on TT and a bigger discount on all precious metals. I don't think you lose any significant amount on any of the unless you pay retail for an all gold peice. You can sell an all gold model for close to msrp when You can walk into an AD and get $6-8k off.

I see the same as well. In general gold or TT watches don't seem to be nearly as popular so there's a smaller resale market for them. Also, gold is much softer than SS and is prone to more dings, scratches, stretching (on bracelets), etc.

I think the higher maintenance of solid gold (and gold plated) pieces also makes them less popular and it takes a bit of the tool watch aspect out of a watch such as the Sub.

IMHO, I think it comes down to supply and demand. TT and all gold are not as popular as SS. I have also noticed that most TT and gold Rolex on TRF for sale are around 20-25% discounted. However, also keep in mind that because the demand for these watches is lower, ADs are more willing to discount them. I purchased my DJII from my AD for 20% off plus no sales tax. Therefore, if I were to sell mine I would probably take only a small hit of similar size as if I were to sell a SS that I bought from an AD.

The depreciation on TT/precious are in line with actual transaction price percentages.

It is a question of culture really. Here in the US SS are more preferred than gold or Two Tone. However, if you go to Asia or Europe, TT is more in demand than SS, hence the better resale.

This is just my observation.

Looks to be supply and demand, if you buck the trend and go for two tone, you A) have no wait list B) get a likely discount.
You can't go wrong with either.

My thoughts on this... The TT watches are really great looking. But gold is softer and more prone to scratches, and TT and solid bracelets stretch and wear faster. Personally, though I like the TT Daytona with the slate dial for example, I would buy an SS white dial because it will be a more durable watch and I wear my Rolexes. I tired wearing cheap sport watches for, well, sport. They just don't cut it. Rolexes have a unique style and feel on one's wrist.

Curiously, SS Daytonas show up here on TRF for under $10k. In the DC area they are more like $14k. Stores around DC that sell Rolexes don't bargain much other than on gold and TT watches, and even then they don't take off much of a discount.

TT fan here

I prefer the TT and I think it looks particularly nice on the Daytona.

How was the generalization formed about only old man's watch? I obviously disagree and I am 35 and have been wearing TT for years.

I have always been told I had an "old soul" so take that for what its worth.

For the most part I prefer the TT models to the SS. Just a generalization on my opinion. Here I am in the minority for sure.

the replacement cost for parts with TT is off putting... my bracelet needed to be replaced on a TT sub, it was more than 3 times the price of a SS and it was close to the total price of the watch when i bought the watch new... granted it was 20 years later but it seemed excessive.
the TT prices are not in line with their counterparts, there is a luxury tax built in.

and as you have already observed, the resale seems to not consider the metal the watch is made of at all... its all about whats inside when it comes to holding value...
imho

I like TT models myself and think quite a few look better in TT than SS IMO. TT and Gold are a great buy used. Its all good SS or TT/Gold.

I just got my SS (white dial) today and it is simply AMAZING. That being said a rose gold looks absolutely stunning, too IMHO.

However, for me it would just be too flashy. Not sure how to better describe it: A two-tone looks like I couldn't afford the all-gold version and the all-gold looks either fake or just too much. I'd probably pass it off as fake just so I wouldn't alienate people.

Hm, then again I wouldn't kick any off my bedside table, come to think about it.....

I agree ! No offense to anyone but I feel as if TT is sort of halfing it. The TT dials look nice because of the gold tone, so solid golds look amazing. I bought my dad a TT sub black ceramic with diamond marker and my mom a dj ii TT mop diamond dial, by pics they looked nice but in person it wasn't as nice. I prefer my solid yg or wg or pt watches. Just looks better. Feels better.

And honestly I don't care if they assume its fake because I don't dress as fancy shmancy. If they can't really tell the difference of a gold tone on a Rolex vs a crappy bright micheal kors like yg tone. They're taste in watches are beyond my wonders. I've actually had a few people whisper about me "look imitation" about the LV I wear lol. When I sport it chest to toe

The TT never appealed to me. I guess I view Subs as tool watches (expensive, really impractical in this day-and-age, tool watches) and as such, should be in SS, as made originally
