I have become addicted to reading this forum so I thought I'd better introduce myself.

I currently have an Explorer II 16570 Polar with lug holes and SELs. I tried to take a few photos but it is harder than I expected to take decent close-up shots - so well done to everyone who has taken the brilliant photos that make this forum so compelling! I'll post something when I manage to take a decent one but that might take a while!

Previously I have had three Seamaster Professionals, a couple of Orange Monsters, a Submariner 14060 and a DateJust 16234 with silver stick dial. Unfortunately almost as soon as I get one, I start thinking about replacing it in my search for the perfect all-rounder. I think the Explorer II is the most comfortable so far, but I am getting the urge to get a Submariner 14060m or Explorer I 114270 instead now. I loved the white dial at first, but now think I would prefer a black dial. I am aiming for a perfect three - a time-only gold dress watch under 36mm, a stainless steel Rolex for daily wear, and a G-Shock beater.

PS If anyone knows why the white dial Explorer II was introduced I'd be interested to know - was it as the nickname suggests linked to polar exploration, or to make the dial more legible, or simply to reach a wider market?

Welcome to TRF!

My first Rolex was a Polar Expl.II and loved it.

Some dislike it as the white hands and white dial aren't as easy to read as the black. As for why, only Rolex knows, but most likely as an option to satisfy varying tastes.

Welcome to TRF, my guess is "Polar" refers to the white dial, but I could be wrong.

Take your time choosing your perfect three, and enjoy the hunt.

I thought it was the first watch that scaled Mt. Everest? Maybe I'm thinking of the 1st Explorer model. Oh, welcome by the way!
