Royal Oak Offshore Thread
Royal Oak Offshore Thread,
Please post your questions, history of the ROO line and whatever you need to know or want to share regarding ROO's. I also would like to know what is the very first ROO model ?

Emmanuel Gueit the Offshore designer, who was told his design wouldn't work and it would not succeed. Guess the nay-sayers were wrong. (steel) The Royal Oak Offshore Steel was introduced in 1993 ref#25721ST.OO.1000ST.01 and later in a Titanium variation. (titanium) |

Yes, I have a question.
Can someone please guide me how to make the according-to-model distinction between 42mm and 44mm ROO's? I read about the Pandas, Ginzas, Trullis, FCs, etc. Which ones are 42 and which 44mm? I'm afraid 44mm would be slightly too large and I intend to opt for a 42mm, hence I'd like to investigate which models are made in the 42mm case. Many thanks gents. And one more - is it true that the ROO 42mm case will be discontinued from this year?

Panda, Safari, Volcano, Navy, Diver, etc. are 42mm.
Ginza, Truli and FC are 44mm. The only FC that are not 44mm are the Bumble Bee and the new Diver that should be hitting the stores late September.

If I am not mistaken there were less than a thousand pieces made of this reference. Even though the AP Royal Oak book states that the first 50 pieces actually did not have the engraving with the word 'Offshore' on the case back (because the company was unsure whether they wanted to name the watch 'Challenger' or 'Offshore') I've been able to document that the word Offshore is actually missing on the first 100 pieces of this reference and not in the first 50 as the book states. I happen to know an owner who's reference number is '83' and missing the Offshore engraving. The case back of the first 100 shows Royal Oak in big font just like on the older 5402s. The idea and the first sketches of the Offshore date back to 1989 as the brand was preparing to celebrate the first 20 years of the Royal Oak and they wanted to come out with another groundbreaking design. Unfortunately, due to internal delays they couldn't release the Offshore until 1993 instead of 1992. The serial on my watch happens to fall within the first 200 pieces and with the Offshore engraving on the case back.

And Genta dislike to wear watch. Is this the reason?

Here you go! Here you go! I know all is legit because the number difference between the D-Serial number of his case and mine is exactly the difference on the Case No. of his and mine. Exactly 115 pieces apart. Perfect chronological sequence!!!

If compared to rolex or panerai (size wise) is 42mm ROO closer to a submariner, or a PAM112? In terms of size and wrist presence.

That being said - Pams just does not work on me. Especially not the 1950s case (which is a shame because they are stunning to look at). The AP ROO is just between the sub and the PAM for me (and apparently in fact as well, thanks to the brilliant picture above).
So the ROO gives me a big, flashy watch but still within the realm of reason. But you do need to try it on before you buy. |
