How to Keep Yachting Expenses Manageable!!!!
Here's a great article about Yachts and their ownership represents in terms of maintenance and fuel costs.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/01/yo...l?ref=business I was beyond shocked when I read: Jeff Vrana, who oversees one man’s five yachts, the largest of which is a 192-foot Lurssen called Ronin, said new buyers might not understand that there are specific yachts for the Bahamas, for example, where the waters are shallower, and the Caribbean, where they are deeper. “When you have money to burn and don’t mind writing checks for $1 million a month, then buy that 190-footer,” he said. When he takes Ronin to Germany from Florida for service this fall, it will cost 180,000 euros in fuel one way and 3 million euros for maintenance work. One easy way a crew can save money is by having a fuel strategy. Ronin holds 30,000 gallons of gas. I am just speechless.

Seems like a lot of money to some, like myself, but not to those that gain at the expense of the middle class.
Now you know what that money that went to bail out Wall Street is being used for. |

The "Ronin" is a different looking yacht built in aluminum and in my eyes very unappealing.
I saw her at Bahia Mar a few years back. (not my pics). |

I've had my yacht for some 5 years now and as everybody on the river says, when it comes to maintenance/ moorings and expenses:
"If you have to ask, you can't afford it." I've found this to be (very sadly) true. Still, nice getting out there isn't it... Attached: Rare picture of older brother of 316lad being allowed to 'steer'. There's a lovely 1972 Explorer I under the jacket. He's as bad at sailing as he is at driving... He's got his eyes closed because he's in denial about the damn great 80,000 ton oil tanker coming towards us over which he reckons we have right of way!!! |

I must say I'm not that much into boats but I guess it must be very nice if you have a cottage on the border of a lake.

Old Westerly Pageant - 24 ft.
Always a big list of "Things To Do" !!! (but an equal "Things To NOT Do", top of which is never to dip ensign to Abramovich-like Gin Palaces) |

Yachting is clearly expensive to maintain, but I agree with one thing in the article, and I am sure many fellow members as Rolex owners will agree... that life is the most salient diminishing asset and we should appreciate and enjoy every moment.

I'll be staying at Bahia Mar in Bovember Mon!
The Ronin yacht looks like a navy vessel.

For the big boys, I heard the rule of thumb is about 10% of the purchase price in annual maintenance / use - assuming standard usage...
So a $30,000,000 boat will be about $3,000,000/yr in dockage, crew, fuel, maintenance, etc... |

A saying a well healed friend has shared with me is this.... "Never buy anything that flies, floats or f@&ks" .. this simple practice easily alleviates much of the financial bleeding...]just rent 2 of these items when needed and perhaps some compromise for the 3rd? seems lots of folks who win the lotto or some other windfall would benefit from this practice as the incidence of these folks going broke in a short time seems surprisingly common.

'Ronin' look slike she used to be a navy or coast guard frigate, not born and bred as a private yacht....
The best line I've heard when it comes to boats was from a salesman we were dealing with a few years back. me - "how does it do on resale?" salesguy - "think of it as an investment in your family" haha - I thought it was a classic line.... |

I saw the Iroquois last weekend in Provincetown. We sailed around it in our little sailboat.
