Fail Safe - 1964

I watched this movie for the 10th time this morning, anyone else seen it? What an incredible work of art. Everything from the directing, lighting, acting... Peter Fonda, Walther Matheou... The tension in the conversations, the severity of the situation (A nuclear attack on Russia). I've seen it, I know what happens, it still has me on the edge of my seat. Even the silent scenes where no one speaks are intense.

Man, they just don't make movies like that anymore

I think I prefer " Dr. Strangelove " of the same period.

I like FailSafe also...it had a gritty reality to describing an unreal situation. Period piece now, but a great movie at the time.

TheVTCguy: I agree! Lumet is one of the great directors of American cinema. This is sort of a companion piece to Dr. Stangelove. In some cases I'm an either/or kind of guy, but never when it comes to film. They are both directed by masters, although I have to give the edge to Dr. Stranglove, with the help of Ken Adams, the production designer of Strangelove (and some Bond-movies). The main difference is that Fail-Safe is a feasable scenario while Stragelove is as absurd as the notion of MAD (mutual assurred destruction) that comes with the territory of making nuclear weapons.

Fail Safe is a great movie. If you like Lumet and Fonda try 12 Angry Men. Another classic with an even more interesting cast.
