16710 GMT Pepsi w/ 3186

Hello.

When looking to purchase a GMT, how can I tell if it has the 3186 movement?

Thank you very much.

I believe all M serials and some late Z but I guess the only way to know is by opening the case back.

There are two test that don't require opening the watch

1) the Wiggle Test. Unscrew the crown and pull it out to the first position (the position that will allow you to jumpt the regular hour hand). While turning the crown, to jump the hour hand, see if the 24 hour hand wiggles or remains static. If it wiggles, it's a 3185. If it remains static, it's a 3186.

2) Again with the crown in first position. Turn the crown 1 full revolution (360 degrees). Note how many hours the regular hour hand moves. If it's 8 hours, it's a 3186. If it's only 5 hours, it's a 3185.

But as previously stated, the only way to know for sure is to open the watch.

If the price is $2500.00 more then it could be it.

I've found 2) more reliable than 1)

Completely agree. The crown test is usually a fail proof way to tell a 3186 from a 3185

The only 3186 movements I've seen had "GMT ll" on the dial as opposed to "GMT II" in the 3185s. The difference being ll vs II. Is this also an indicator?

Not a reliable indicator.

And get what you want. I find it odd that the last serial of the traditional gmt with the 3186 draws negative comments on a rolex forum. Maybe you could perform the same job with an omega gmt for less than a 3185. Maybe for half of the omega with a Tissot. If being the last serial and different movement with tighter gear train and different gear ratio makes it more interesting to you then that's all that matters. I wish people would drop the negative comments. I wish I was buying apple stock 10 years ago but I'm not criticizing anyone that bought early. I won't say it's over valued. Some will. What about the panerai 127? Much less complicated than any rolex gmt and I like that watch also it has a simple hand wind movement but if I had the chance I buy one.
Don't let the negative comments put you off. Good luck.

So is the 3186 not worth the premium over the 3185? I would like the last Pepsi model produced, but if the 85 is just as good then maybe I shouldn't waste my time looking for the 86.

functionally they are nearly identical. 3185 movement has been around for many years and works just fine.

Well only if you think it will, ask the same question will a late 1980s sub with a cal 3035 be worth a premium over one with a cal 3135.Although the 3186 has a slightly better second time zone setting, performance wise would doubt if anyone would find any difference cal 3185/6.And now the 3186 has been superseded by the 3187 which is a 3186 with the in-house shock system, but they are all based on the 3185 and many parts interchange.

The wiggle test doesn't always work either. Open the caseback and read the numbers. Only reliable way

Any price 'premium' will be in the seller's mind... don't buy into it

That's up to you as value is in the eye of the beholder, but I sure have been wondering why someone is looking for and wanting to pay a premium for a feature which they do not understand.
