My SD gave me a real scare last week when it’s normally impeccable accuracy was abruptly interrupted. It consistently runs at < 1 sec deviation / day, but when I checked it against my computer’s clock it was 30 seconds fast. Over the course of the day it continued to gain time and generally act erratically.

Although I couldn’t pinpoint a source, my suspicion from the behavior was that it had been magnetized! I’ve read that magnetism can be diagnosed with a compass, but I didn’t have one handy. Well I didn’t have the time to fiddle with it too much so I tossed it in a drawer and slapped on my Garmin Forerunner. About a week later I wound it up to check the accuracy, and it was back to running fine! It’s been keeping great time now, on par with where it was before.

I can’t explain what caused the watch to run so erratically, but to the SD’s credit it’s pulled through! Glad to have it back on the wrist, and I may appreciate it even more after the scare!

So there for your watch was not magnetised in the first place if a watch is magnetised its magnetised.And the only way to cure it is to de-magnetise it with the appropriate tool it cannot de-magnetise itself.

How is it done, does the case have to be opened and mechanism taken out?

Not unless the watch is very badly magnetised this very very seldom happens most can be done by taken the case back off but in many cases that's not necessary.

Agreed! I can’t explain what caused the watch to run so erratically, but since it "fixed" itself merely from unwinding and sitting for a few days, I can't imagine it was ever magnetized to begin with. Will probably remain a mystery. I’m just glad to have it back on track!

Great question! My computer time seems to be pretty accurate though and I double check it against my Garmin Forerunner, which should be almost exactly accurate. Excellent point that the clock used to measure accuracy must itself be accurate!
