Two-tone sub with all SS clasp?

Quick question - my father-in-law has a TT sub with a black face that has a standard SS clasp that looks like it's right off a 16610 sub. He bought it from an AD on vacation in the late '90's or early '00's. Is this correct? He is not the type to tinker or otherwise change his watches.

I was thinking of picking up a TT clasp for him to complete the look, as I know that at least the later TTs had a TT clasp as well. Just wanted to check into this, as it seems odd.

It is absolutely correct. They changed to the steel/gold clasp approx a decade ago.

Yes, normal. They didn't use the gold through the clasp until early 2000...I forget the actual model number, but I believe it was when they went to a SEL bracelet that the change was made.....

Thanks for the info. Sorry about posting in the wrong section - I figured this was more of a "technical"-type question. What do you guys think? Should I look into a TT clasp for him? It's the type of thing he'd appreciate, but would that impair the authenticity of his timepiece? I'd love to hear some opinions.

Personally, I don't think that is a modification that gives rise to bastardizing a great watch, but I'd love to know what greater community at-large thinks. As an aside, what could I reasonably expect to pay for a TT sub clasp?

sounds like he's the only fella who's going to be enjoying that piece, so authenticity shouldn't be an issue. if for some reason he decides to sell in the future, at least he still has the original clasp, right?

Yeah, I mean I just picture him swapping it at the screw on the fliplock end, and a the diver's extension at the other.

Funny thing is, that once I noticed it, it's driving me crazy. Now, of course it's not my Rolex, it's his. But so far, he and I have very similar tastes and "likes," so it's been pretty easy to buy gifts for him over the last few years. If I think I'd like it, it's usually a sign he would too.

There would be nothing wrong with a swap....finding one would be the hard part, and not to mention the cost!

I'd personaly just leave it, it is correct as is..

I think the first TT clasps came on the YM and Daytona before making it was to the TT sub and TT GMT.

hi, i am new to this forum. First i got mine TT sub with the SS clasp, sold it and bought a newer one with the TT clasp. I think the sub using SS clasp is using tritium marker on their dial. The bracelet is not yet a SEL, and the bracelet extension is much different. And if it's a blue dial, the color is different. If it's possible, i would prefer that you sell it, or trade it for a newer one. thanks

Depending on the bracelet, either a 93153 or a 93253, the clasp and diver extension is different. I'm thinking that the newer 93253 was always a through-gold clasp but the point is that they are not directly interchangeable..

If you want to put on the later clasp you will need the additional j-link and circle link too. These clasps alone are very difficult to find and the price is likely 1 to 2,000 bucks, depending on if it's early or late, has the additional links and on condition.
