Pressure test price?

So there I was, wonder into a place called "Little Watch Shop" in Houston. Sounds like a mom-and-pop place, why not help them out a bit?
I ask them if pressure test is available on the spot. They said yes. I ask them how much, the lady out front took my GMT II and said,"Let me ask him," .

Anyway, later they gave me my watch back. Told me it's done, and it can withstand 160m according to their dry test. And it's $41.65 with tax.

Seems a bit high, the price, considering AD offered to do it for free. Am I a sucker or am I just being cheap ? Haha!

How much does it normally cost?

So, you asked how much, she said I'll go check and came back with the test done (w/out your consent) and a 40 bucks bill? I'd be pissed. The principle of it ...

yeah, that wasn't very nice, was it?

No data, no record of the actual test, just words. Who knows if they have done it or not? I was not watching, as I was busy looking to find some straps.

I did not purchase the straps at then end, after they told me how much I owed them. Just paid and left. Probably would never set foot in there again.

Should have asked them the name of the water tester. Even better should have asked them if you could watched them do the test.

Did you pay them? If it were me I wouldn't. Asking for the price of the service is not equivalent to authorizing the work to be done.

Yeah, "shady" is a good way to put it.

I did pay them. The sales was nice to me, and I didn't feel like ruining her/mine nice state of mind.

It would not be reasonable to expect it to be performed free of charge but at least you should have been given the opportunity to authorise the work.

Keep your distance from this outfit in the future, of course.

A dry test is a vacuum test and would mean nothing to me or my GMT.
The idea that a vacuum test to 0.8 bar is equal to a pressure of 100+ metres has always made me...

A pressure test is a pressure test and it seems that this was not done.

If they used something like a Witschi Proofmaster with an attached compressor (very nice unit), then it was likely vacuum and pressure tested from -0.8 to 10 bars.

I've been to this place once and they were very busy. It gave me the impression that their communication is not the best as they were all kind if running around.

I had my DJ tested at Tourneau at the Galeria for free a few months ago. I think Hal Martins will do them as well but not sure about price.

$40 sounds a bit steep to me.

40 bucks and you know that your seals are in good shape... what more do you want ???

You probably can't have a decent lunch for much less than that..

Have to agree Larry and for a pressure check thats quite a reasonable price.

Depending on the cost of the test, I would look on ebay or ask around and buy the tester itself ----

One time I went to rent a really tal ladder, 22 footer, for a week -- The cost was coming out to $180 ---- So I asked them how much to sell it? The guy said $250 CASH ---
So I just bought it --- I paid $70 more, but I got my job done and I own the ladder....

So it might be worth your while to pay a little more and get the pressure tester....

A professional pressure tester is somewhere around $2500 bucks, how is it worth to by your own?

I kinda agree here. It wasn't the best business practice but I will pay $40 to help out small local businesses. You really can't do anything for $40. I got 4 beers at the Phillies game last night for $36.50.....

Exactly --- jst pay $40 $50 or whatever to ensure your seals are good and case is perfectly closed --- if you can ensure that, you do not have to worry about pressure test --

Haha, cheers, Larry. That solve my question. Knowing the price was not unreasonable.

I just wish they could communicate better. Next time i will make sure to clear with them in advance.

For the OP: that pressure test was too much, plus they did it without your authorization. I'd be pissed.

My watch place does it for $0 - $15 bucks depending on who's there and they always give me the test results print-out from the machine, so I know it was really done and all the little details about how my watch performed.

Just cause your^ watch place does it for $15 doesn't it mean he paid too much. My family owns a Fast Fix Jewelry Repair, they have a basic pressure tester and will charge up to $15 to do it for you... But for a high-grade watch they do not recommend using that. They take it to a professional watch maker who charges us about $15 - as such, $40-$50 is the standard for a PROPER pressure test. I'm not sure what your watch place uses but keep in mind that $40+ is a standard.

Definitely a mom-n-pop type place, you were probably pleasant with them, and the exchange was such that they knew you had a Rolex and would pay the money, especially considering you wanted to have it done anyways. It's not the correct MODERN business practice, but it's hardly shady - this is how the "old-timers" do it. If you refused to pay, they wouldn't have forced you.

My watch place (a small time shop in the mall that I buy all my non rolexes from) I think uses that bergeon pressure tester where it doesn't require the bracelet to be removed. I've seen it online for around $3k.

There's a BIG difference between a pressure/vacuum tester and a leak tester although you could use a leak tester for a basic seal check to 3atm. Most pressure testers are north of $5k.

$6.50 for a wet test. Sorry but that was shady and i would have refused to pay because you never agreed to the test!
