Service Question
Just bought my wife a pre-owned datejust from 2006. The local jeweler who is an AD, says I need to get it serviced. I am pretty sure he is correct. He says it needs to be done every 5 to 7 years. I do not know if it has been serviced in the past. Would like some input on the need for service and if I can find out from Rolex if it has been serviced.
Thanks, Brad |

i would assume it hasn't been serviced.
if it is running fine, i would just wear it, ive gone over 12 years without servicing a daily wear submariner.... when i finally brought if for service there was not mention of any unusual wear during service at RSCNY. additionally, i was told by 1 service technician at a reputable international chain .... "when it breaks bring it in for service, not before"

Rolex would only know if its been serviced if the watch had been through their own facility. Otherwise, there's no central database of repair notifications.
Asking your question here is going to get responses from those who swear by a servicing time standard of 'x' number of years and as noted above, the 'let it go until there's something wrong' followers. Want to know who's right? Everybody, because every Rolex owner with an opinion and a web access has a different experience and outlook. You can make a case that a Rolex is a finely tuned instrument that is worthy of regular attention, and conversely, you can easily find evidence that a Rolex is so well made, that with normal use, it can run for a decade or more without tinkering. Wait for the opinions to pour in and then decide for yourself. Get it serviced and post before and after pictures here so we can all drool or let it slide and post pictures of a watch that runs and runs and we can obsess over those pictures as well. |

It's a used watch.
You have no idea how it's been used or abused. Why not make just like new with a service to start out? Then you can wait until the innards turn to dust if you wish.

With the new watches I've bought......I believe in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"
philosophy......with the used watches I've bought, I get them serviced immediately....then revert to my philosophy.

First, Rolex does not make any watch by "model year", so unless there is in-hand evidence (provenance) that it was first purchased in 2006, then such a statement is only an estimate. Rolex recommends a service "about every 5 years, depending on use...", this does not mean that it suddenly starts falling apart at some magical point in time, but only suggest that if the watch is used in harsh environments, service sooner. If it is well taken care of, it can easily go longer between service calls. Finally, seal integrity is possibly the paramount issue with an aging watch considering the advances in oils and lubes.. Have it pressure tested, and if it is sound, save your service money for another year or two..

Thank you everyone for your opinions and info. For the sake of my own sanity I'm just going to get it serviced and then revert to Bob's philosophy.

If it was serviced by a reputable watch maker, he/she usually/traditionally marks it so, on the inside of the back.
I was told my Tudor Sub was serviced. Brought it to a watch maker and he verified that it wasnt... So I'd have it checked out and take it from there..!! -

I'm in the 5-7 year club. No reason to neglect lubrication and refit worn parts. A pressure test once a year is a must as well. I do mine around my birthday in march
