Im a little nervous

Ive had my DateJust for sale here in the classifieds for a few weeks now and had a few PMs about it but nothing substantial. I though Id put it on eBay tonight and within 2 mins of me listing it and 4 views later it sold for more money than I had it listed here for.

Im a little nervous though because the buyer has been a member on eBay as of August 2, 2012 (not that a scammer cant hack an account with history) and after doing a search on his user name hes bid on and has won over $80K worth of Rolexes (DateJust / DateJust II, GMTs, Daytonas & Subs), a $22K Patek Philippe, $18K worth of Cartier watches and a $18K Hublot watch....thats almost $140K worth of watches purchased in a little over 2 months.

Hes received some feedback from the sellers but not all. In the 31 feedback he does have all watches were are over $8K in price so I know hes paid. My question is should I be concerned. Does it sound like hes got a hold of a bunch of stolen credit cards and is going hog wild?? If he did get a hold of stolen credit cards how long would it take for the sellers on eBay to find out theyve been scammed? I know credit card companies can do charge back months later.

I stated I would accept Paypal, a bank certified check, USPS money order and a bank wire transfer. I hope to GOD he doesnt use Paypal, then Im pretty much in the clear.

What do yall think?

I doubt that he is using stolen credit cards it wouldn't take this long for him to get caught. I would ask for his contact info and talk to him. Maybe he has a storefront/dealer. If he is scamming on ebay, they would have shut him down by now. I would ask for a copy of his drivers license and a verified address and place of employment.

By the way, one of ebay scams is for buyers to report they received a counterfeit watch or a "box of rocks" and not the item they won. Paypal always sides with the buyer that's why many of us do not use PayPal. I haven't sold anything on ebay for over 10 years and don't see it happening for another decade either. Always fully document your shipment and take plenty of pics - to include the serial number and model numbers between the lugs. A photo of the movement would be helpful also.

Sounds fishy to me. Proceed with extreme caution.

Seller beware on eBay.

Ask the buyer for personal info to verify his identity and if he refuses you`ll know you`re dealing with a scammer.

Anything you can think of that will enable you to ID him, also ask other questions,by way of casual conversation,to see if his "story" sounds fishy or not.I`d definitely ask him how and why he`s been buying so many valuable watches in such a short time.

Good luck!

You can request his personal information via EBAY.

Match this information to the "shipping/confirmed" address on his paypal account, if he uses this form of payment. If it does not match, inform him/her that you can only ship to confirm addresses.

Good luck!

Whenever I sell anything and get paid through Paypal I only ship to a confirmed address. Here's what I said in my eBay ad:

I will ONLY ship within the Continental United States and will require a direct signature at the time of delivery.
If paying through Paypal I will ONLY ship to a confirmed Paypal address, no exceptions.

Agree with all of the above

I can only confirm what I have read here and in various other forum threads. The scam mentioned above, with buyers reporting ebay they received a fake watch, seems a commonly used one (recently happened to one of the TRF members - check the forums)

Ive read that too. Im not worried about that. As silly as it sounds, Im going to have my wife video tape me at the post office packing the DJ up and sealing the box in front of the USPS clerk when Im paying for the postage. And as proof that I do in fact own the DJ Im selling, I have plenty of detailed pictures and I have a receipt from a Rolex AD that did some work on it a few years back that shows the same the serial / model number as the DJ Im selling. So Im pretty well covered there.

My main concern is hes using a stolen credit card or a hacked bank account since hes bought alot of watches over the past 2 months. After looking over Paypals "sellers protection" it looks as though as long as I do everything Paypal has listed below I am covered from credit card / bank fraud.

https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?c...Agreement_full
Seller Protection:
11-11.5

Im also not going to ship until I transfer the funds from my Paypal account to my bank account and I see that the money has been cleared by my bank. If Paypal puts a hold on the payment I'm just going to refund the money back to the buyer because Im not sending my watch without money in hand!!

Well buyer paid, confirmed address and all but Paypal is holding the funds so I issued a refund.

I'm not shipping my DJ without money in hand! So it's back up for sale here in the classifieds. :)

If Paypal has put a hold on the funds before releasing to you, why is that such a bad thing that you decided to refund the money to the buyer? I thought Paypal holding funds is for the buyer's protection and shouldn't be something for the seller to be concerned about?

From Paypal's pages:

REASONS PAYPAL HOLD YOUR FUNDS.

You have been selling on eBay for less than 90 days
You have an eBay feedback score fewer than 100 and have not yet established a record of good performance
You have received fewer than 20 Detatiled Seller Ratings on eBay in the last 12 months or your eBay seller performance is below standard
You have a high rate of customer disputes or a low eBay feedback percentage
You have been a PayPal member for less than 6 months and have limited selling activity
You have a sudden change in selling activities (e.g. suddenly selling expensive items, selling large numbers of items, etc.)
You happen to be selling in a high risk category such as tickets, travel, gift vouchers, computers, electronics, mobile phones, etc.

Depending on the circumstances, paypal may set aside payments for a single transaction or for all payments to sellers who meet the criteria above.

HOW YOU CAN GET YOUR MONEY BEFORE 21 DAYS.

(1). If feedback (pos) has been left by your buyer then paypal normally release the funds within 48 hours of it being left.

(2). If a tracking number shows delivery of the item + 3 days.

Well Im concerned about it. I dont know this guy from a hole in the wall. Hes only been on eBay for 2 months and has been buying up expensive watches like crazy. I dont know if hes a scammer or not. He could easily swap my DJ for a fake and say I sent him a fake and file a "item not as described" claim. Then what...well since Paypal is holding my money, they wouldnt release it to me. Instead they would return it to the buyer then I would have NO money and NO Rolex. Im not willing to take that risk so I sent him his money back.

Would YOU ship a $6500 Rolex without a penny in your pocket because I certainly wont and am not and Im sure most every seller on TRF wont either. Thats why most sellers on here accept cash in person or a bank wire transfer. Im not a reseller / jeweler, im a guy with a DJ to sell. I cant afford to take chances like that.

Ive been a member on eBay for over 4yrs and have 0 negatives / 274 positive feedback and have sold many items costing over $1000 and have never had a hold placed on my funds. Ive been a verified premier Paypal member for even longer and have never had any buyer complaint(s) so I dont see why Paypal is holding my money yet they take their fee.

Lesson learned. I will not use Paypal for large transactions in the future.

Is he Asian? With the weak US dollar, many are coming here to buy watches to take back. If he's buying gold Rolex, SS black face daytonas, PP Nautilus, it could be headed overseas
