I'm almost 50 and when I was 12 I saw a watch on Jacque Cousteau(sp?). No internet, just books back then. Long story but at age 23 got my first SS Sub date, figure now he wore a SD but I was happy!

Not Rick Flair but my past boss. He had a ss datejust what sold me was what he always said about it in his thick Italian/German accent "I may not wear gucci shirt, I may not wear versace jean but when I get up in the morning I wear Rolex!. His wife worked with us and she told me one day that it was fake? Then she looked at me and said yeah did you think it was real? Ha we are not rich.

Years later after I could afford to play. I bought a sub LV and air-king and posted a few pics on facebook. I noticed he left my friend count after I sent him a PM and said you inspired me to buy Rolex watches. I never did tell him what his wife told me. LOl

A guy whom lived a few doors down from me when I was 9 years old. He and his 19 year old son were divers. One day they were cleaning their gear and we were checking stuff out. Another neighbor noticed the Sub on the fathers wrist which led to a full on WIS conversation about Rolex and Subs. Though all my other friends were bored to tears, I listened closely. Then, at 12, a friend of my dads had a Sub and I engaged him in conversation.

When I was a kid I remember many stories of my uncle and others wearing Rolex and I always wanted one. When I was 14 I went down to Mexico with my best friend and everyone in his family had a president or Daytona completely blinged out. My bud was given one as a gift for his 15th birthday and his mom made him return it. He was really bummed about it. After that I always wanted one.

Just me for the most part.

I was given a vintage Tudor as a gift a few years ago which looked a lot like a modern TT DJ. When I was at an AD inquiring about service cost for the Tudor I happened to look at some modern Rolexes, especially the TT DJ's. They looked so sexy compared to my Tudor and I slowly started to think about buying one over the next several weeks.

I happened to be making a lot more money than usual in my software programming biz back then (2008) and so naturally the amount of excess cash I had was piling up. I thought about it a lot and figured even if I buy one, it's not like the money spent would be gone, I could sell the watch and get most of the money back.

That's when the "itch" started... I started to look at pics of DJ's online (including here on TRF before I was a member) and then started to visit the AD just to see them in person. I was "drawn" to them, I can't explain it. Something in me really wanted to own one and wear one at that point. So eventually I pulled the trigger and got my first Rolex (TT DJ w/diamond dial) in october of 2008. Then the addiction began...

I became a member of TRF. The rest is history... My next Rolex was a RG DD which I had for about three years. Then I flipped the DJ and DD for a RG Daytona (my ultimate grail). Idk where I'll go from here... but eventually I still want to be able to have a DD and the RG Daytona at the same time. I also want a true beater Rolex, but since I have an OCD-like fixation with gold, it'll have to be either the all gold sub or all gold GMT.

So anyway, yeah, that's my story....

I really can't say that any person influenced me, but one morning at my favorite restaurant another customer, whom I'd known from when I worked there, let me look at his Explorer II and I really took a good hard look at it.

I made my decision right then and there that I would own a Rolex and by noon, I was the proud owner of an Explorer 114270.

And now, with three in the stable, I've never had even a second's regret.

I have to say that a Rolex speaks for itself.

I have always had multiples watches, mostly Seikos. One day in 1991 I decided to buy my first Rolex and since then I have owned several and have also given each of my sons a Rolex (tt Thunderbird, GMTII/3186).

My work colleague played a role in my decision. We've been working together for a number of years. On his 50th birthday, he decided to treat himself to a nice gift and purchased a YG President. It was quite the watch. This was a few years back and before I became a WIS.

A few years later, when I was approaching a personal milestone, I decided to treat myself to somthing nice and decided to buy a nice watch. I didn't really know much back then but remembered the unforgettable piece my colleague had. And the rest, as they say is history.

I always loved Rolex and admired my father for having saved up dearly for his wg 1803 dd.

When I found out that one of my true idols Ray Mears wears Rolex, it sealed the deal. I had to have one too.

I saved up dearly just like my pop and eventually picked up a 16610. Still my most favourite watch of all time.

Short story,
I've been a Movado guy and still am ! I wear only movado's to work. and I'm not ashamed.
They are great imo.

But I walked into a Rolex dealer with my friend (All my friends wear Rolex)
The sales grinned at me and asked me to take my movado off and try on the sub.

Bam !

Since then, my Broker has become rich and I've become poor !

My dad wore a gold Rolex bubble back for many years. He also had an Air King he bought to wear when he did a tour in Korea. Once in a while he would let me wear his Air King, it was a special treat. When I started my first job out of college, my boss wore a Submariner. They were both influential in my first buying a Datejust, and then an Air King 14000. Years later, I traded both watches to buy a GMt Master II, and this summer, partly because of TRF I bought the new design Explorer I. As an engineer, I have always mechanical things, and Rolexes are kind of the ultimate mechanical object that you can carry with you always. Still lusting after a Daytona as well...

It all started 25+ years ago when I subscribed to National Geographic magazine. The back page / cover would invariably have some incredibly story of a diver / climber etc that had conquered some amazing feat while wearing a Rolex. That got me wanting to get one. I wanted the worlds most rugged watch. Yeah, it's Rolex's marketing machine that got me. So, my first Rolex was a TT blue sub. Lasted about 5 years till I decided to sell it to help with a deposit for a home. In between the next 20+ years, there was another 5 year period where I dabbled in IWC, but then liquidated them for another home. Then this year, I felt like I was at the stage where I could justify Rolex again. And here I am!
