I hate it when I have to tell people...
...bad news: nice lady brings in this for me too look at, it was a gift from her sister who passed away recently...she wanted to know what it was worth and if I could add links to the bracelet...
It says "Original Gas EscaDe Valve" spelled wrong and on a 'Datejust' no less... Like the laser etched coronet on the side of the '18k' steel case? Now I have to be the bearer of bad news...

I know it makes us laugh, but it has to be sooo disapointing to people. How did she take it? I imagine some will become angry with you.

Yes, sometimes there is the disbelief, sometimes they think you're crazy and don't know what you're doing.
This one I got: "but it SAYS Rolex?" Yeah, it does...so enjoy...she just did not want to believe. She said her sister was married to a rich guy, so it HAS to be real... So the news is not only disappointing, but calls into question the borther-in-law too... Sad.

You never know, maybe he really thought he was getting a real Rolex. You know, sometimes folks want to do something very special and get victimized themselves. It's a cruel world for the unaware.

True story..anyway, the lady gave me some nice (real) coins though. Not a total bust.

Indeed it does. Thanks for the reply. Interesting, and I hope you post more of these.

This lady brought an obviously fake submariner to my shop one day. The crystal was cracked. She asked me if I had the tools to fix the watch, and I told her I did indeed have a hammer. She asked how that would help, then we exchanged glances.... and she left. Call me a snob, but I just don't have the tolerance for replica-supporters. I'd rather a person wear a real Citizen from Wal-Mart than a fake Rolex from Canal street.

I would wear a Timex before I rationalize the price of a Rolex by wearing a fake.

True and very sad. On introspection, five years ago, I was (even now not beyond a point!) not able to tell a real one from a well made fake.

this is the kinda stuff my friends always bring to me to verify if it's authentic or not....
they'll argue it's real when I tell them it's fake. I don't want to fight with them....it's not my job to educate these people it makes me look like the bad guy when I give the bad news, especially when they just paid $500 for it on the street corner or the flea market..... I see all kinds of people wearing fake Rolex and carrying fake designer hand bags, and some of these people think it's the real thing.... there's usually some story behind it....like this is authentic but the price is so cheap because it came from thier discount wholesale store my friend went to Cuba and bought a box of Cohibas on the street. he swears they're the real deal. you can't tell him otherwise I guess some people are just more gullable than others. if it's too good to be true.....well then it probly is. |
