Visit to the AD! SAFE FOR WORK! (Sorry, JJ, NO cleavage!) lol.
I went to my AD today since he informed me on the phone yesterday that he has EXACTLY the DD in stock that I have always wanted.
Although I cannot afford the DD, yet, I went to have a closer look at it, also to see how it would look on my wrist. I was allowed to take some pics. Sorry about the quality of the colours. It IS a SILVER coloured dial, but on some of the pics it looks like a champagne dial. Those darned spotlights made it very difficult to get decent reality in colours. The Rolex Day-Date, ref. # 118238 with a silver coloured dial with SuperLuminova "sticks" hour markers! Enjoy! I had doubts about the SIZE, but IMHO it looks pretty cool on my wrist size-wise, and the colour of my skin is also not too light for an 18 kt. DD, I believe. The sapphire crystal on the new DD is actually DOMED! It is only very slightly curved, but it looks awesome! From a distance, you almost think it has a plexi crystal; a feature I really like! Also, the domed crystal breaks reflections very effectively, and when you tilt the watch a bit, you get that (IMHO!) nice "distorted look" of the dial like on the old plexi glass models! One of the pics also shows the cleverly made clasp locking system: The is a ROLL on the clasp (under the Rolex Coronet) that makes sure that the clasp snaps well into place--------every time! That roll can be exchanged if it is worn out by many years of wear. Also, the new, updated, bracelet has SOLID centre and end links (the predecesson, the 18238, did NOT have solid centre links. They were in fact hollow, but did not LOOK hollow. The update came in year 2000, btw., together with polished lugs and the domed sapphire crystal).

Bo,
Thanks for the eye candy, sure is one great watch. I must say, though it does look a little small on you, but that could just be the pics. Jerry |

Well, I actually think the size fits me pretty well?: But "just buying" it is NOT an option, yet. I simply must wait until I have the funds to purchase it. Let there be no doubt, though: I will definately get one

142,300 DKR (= US $ 27,365)
YES, Rolex watches are very expensive in Denmark due to high taxes and VAT (25 %). BTW.: The sales' assistant could personally do no more than 10 % discount on it (which is RIDICULOUS!), but if I was interested he would ask the manager if he would give me the 20 % I asked for (IF I were to buy it).

Beatiful watch. I think the DD looks great with a number of different dials, and I really like the silver. Good choice.
I once went to a AD just to look at, and mabe try on a DD. I planed to get one in another 5 yrs or more. I just wanted a taste. Less than two months later, I was the owner of one....and broke. My addiction now has me craving a black SS sub date or SD, so I am trying my best to avoid the AD. Bo, in my eyes, you are one brave man!!!

I love this watch also. But as noted in the pics and also when i tried it on, its just too small. Are you sure you want to drop that much cash on a watch that size. I mean, i love the watch, but the size puts me off. Have you tried a 39 mm Masterpiece Dad Date? If you could get a basic one without the ice, i would still prefer 39mm. But in the end its your call and your money and your liking that counts mate. If you are happy, then we are happy! |

Looks like Christmas may come early...can't you ask those 2 beautiful ladies that you were with in a previous pic last week to help you buy it for "services rendered" by you?

Bo, first of all...beautiful DD! You really can't appriciate all of the updates until you phisically try one on. The weight alone is staggering (and unexpected). The domed crystal is so subtle, but yet the effect is remarkable. You don't get that annoying "round flash" sort of reflection at all.
What do you think of the new clasp? I didn't realize there was a roller in there (nice pic). I have never heard of any complaints about the previous version, so I wonder what "flaw" inspired the new design. As far as the fit...the 36mm does not look too small at all on your wrist. It does look a little tight though, but that could easily be fixed with a link or 2 depending on the "feel" your comfortable with. Here's a quick pic I took to show the slack in mine. It looks a little looser then it feels. I can just barely fit my index finger between the bracelet and my wrist. Again, beautiful watch. Good Luck! |

Bo, I think it looks GREAT on you!
The size looks fine. The DD is such a classic, timeless piece, that bigger ISN'T better in this case IMO. It is a watch you would wear FOREVER! Now that it's been on your wrist, I bet you're that much more motivated to save. I know I am. I do believe I'll have my DD one day Glad you enjoyed your fun-filled AD visit!!!! |

Looks great!
Bo,
I also think it looks great on you. Don't forget the Rolex forums tend to be filled with sports watch lovers, so 36 mm may seem small to those accustomed to 40-44 mm sports watches; but comparing a Day-Date to a Sub, for example, is an apples and oranges comparison. I have and have had several Daytonas, Subs, a GMT II, and a DJ, but my Day-Date is in a class all its own. R/Otto |

Bo,
Sell your daytona, and buy a DD. I bet you have no use for your chrono. |

No brainer
Buy it. Sell the Daytona and drop the GMT and just cut out some expenses and you probably could swing it.
I tried on a DD on an Oyster bracelet with that same dial in my local AD and to say I was in lust was an understatement. There's something about a DD. |

Hmmm, for which model? The WG DDs I've seen lately are around $27k retail. I thought it was the same for YG. |

DDs are definitely in a class of their own. The president bracelet is very comfortable, especially if you size it right. You should have inquired with the AD to see if they could have added an extra link for you for fitting purposes; then again, maybe they know already that you don't have the dough for it and didn't bother with the extra effort.

Not bad! I realize when I said $27k, that was for the WG DD with DIAMOND dial. Didn't check retail on a regular dial, though I'm assuming it would be $3k-$4k less.

Bo,
Would you consider a Rose gold presidential watch? I saw a rose gold presidential watch last week with a white dial roman number and in domed bezel. |

You know it could be because I have mostly owned the tool watches but the day date just doesn't do it for me. The platinum one is nice depending on the dial but the all gold I don't know, IMO its a little Day-dated. But to be fair I haven't seen the new one maybe its nicer in the flesh.

I think definitely that a man of your stature should have this watch. Seriously, Bo, That is a beautiful watch and the definitive Rolex. I have a 7 & 1/2 wrist and don't feel my TT DJ looks small at all. It's just a different look and the weight of that much gold will feel similar to a 40 mm sport model. Problem is, once you have that model, there's no place to go but down!

Yes, watchnut is right! The Day-Date is "definitive", and looks outstanding. It fits your wrist well, IMHO, and I'll bet the weight more than makes up for the 36mm size. Good luck on your quest for one, by the time I can afford it I'll be to old to care what time it is!

I went from a sub to a DD and size wasn't an issue. The weight was a ton difference which I like. The DD is just an incredible classic. If one had to sell all other watches to get a DD it wouldn't be the end of the world. I really don't want to wear anything else even though I love the subs.

Looks great. I think a lot of people are scared of the 36mm DD/DJ for no reason. The DD/DJ is a classic watch style, and classics are smaller no doubt. I think the DJ will look very odd, if offered in a 40mm version. Even on a larger wrist, I really think they look fine. Remember, they are fancier watches, and arent going to have the size and physical prescenes of a diver. I LOVE it! :)
And arent they super comfortable on your wrist? No sharp edges, or getting it caught on things. |

Doesn't trying a watch on like that make you feel rich? God, I tried on a WG Daytona at my AD the other day and looking down the length of my arm was an amazing experience. The DD is beautiful indeed. I hope your dream comes true very soon!
