Icon20 New Years Eve Formal Wear Rolex Sub or Cartier Tank

Its that time of year again. I hope everyone is not too tired with the either or questions but I'm really curious what the TRF members think about this question. I have a formal wear event for New Years Eve and I am planning on wearing my SS Sub C. I was watch browsing and I've been considering a leather strap watch. I walked into my local Cartier shop and browsed. The Cartier SS Tank Solo XL automatic on an alligator caught my eye. I know Cartier is no where near the caliber of Rolex but is it a better watch aesthetically for formal wear? Or should I just save the $ and wear my Sub C ala Sean Connery. Thoughts, opinions are welcome.

I would wear the SUBC it truly is a watch you can do anything with. The tank though is a beautiful watch and if you're looking to spice up the collection there is nothing wrong with that watch at all =).

Try to ask this question somewhere on Cartier forum.

The Cartier is every bit the calibre of a Rolex and there is no way I would be caught in a Rolex Sub and a tux. No way. James Bond is a fictional character.

I think more women would notice what kind of car you are driving than what watch you are wearing!

If you already own a dress watch, e.g. Cartier, etc. I would say wear the dress watch with the tux. Since you don't, and your lady friend likes your Rolex, wear that one. It is kind of fun to think of the different milestones that you celebrate with your watch.

Recently I had to go to a dressy event, and wore a rather expensive black Armani silk skirt suit. My Rolex Yachtmaster, which I wear every day, with every outfit, was "in the shop" getting serviced at the RSC. I thought about going watch-less, but then remembered that we have my husband's great-grandmother's Gruen white gold +diamond Art Deco watch in a drawer. It is a classic cocktail watch on a black cord. I'm sure this will make WIS' go nuts, but I went ahead and wound it (probably for the first time in over 40 years), without regard to the unlubricated gears and movement. It seemed to keep good time, so I wore it all night. It fit just perfectly with my outfit.

When wearing a tux your watch is suppose to be understated. I myself when wearing a tux wear a rolex cellini.

Traditionally, a watch is not worn with a Tux.

That's probably the most correct. However, we live in a time when casual is the new formal, at least in America. In California, you can't get people out of their t-shirts, shorts and flipflops, and Cali is leading the rest of the country down the road to Adidas Warm-Up Suit hell. That said, everything has gone kind of sporty. Like a tight Tom Ford suit ("Daniel Craig, call your office!") and the vogue in big watches.

To the OP: As nice as that Cartier is, I would wear a classic YG Cartier tank on a seal skin strap. Kind of a dream, I know, since seal skin is banned. The original YG Cartier Tank seems so classy to me.

No watch is probably the best with tux.

I wouldn't be seen dead...

wearing a Sub with a tux. If you don't have anything dressier to wear, then be even more appropriate and don't wear a watch at all.

Get the Cartier if you like the watch, not because of some party.

Just because you CAN wear a Rolex Sub with a tux doesn't mean you should...Don't buy a Cartier just to go with a tux. Just don't wear the Sub. Go without.

Cartier finish is about a million times better than a Rolex (not a million times, I just used that for EMPHASIS). The movement is a proven workhorse finished to a high standard. It's a very fine watch.

But I'd rather have a Rolex for the most part!

If you like the idea of a dress watch, but don't want to stray from the Rolex brand, how about a Cellini? They're remarkably good value for money (for what you get), especially if bought preowned. I recommend the Danaos in white and pink gold

I wouldn't hesitate to wear the sub, but then again I'm not really one known for my sense of style or fashion.

Cartier. If you don't wear it for formal events, when will you ever wear it?

Really Rolex say their watch goes with everything ? My oh my why would they say such a thing ? How strange to see a manufacturer backing their own product.

Rules are made to be broken, individuality etc. etc. but to me it just doesn't look good at all.

There are many great ways to break the rules with formal wear. The dark blue velvet jacket is a recent one that looks very good.

A sports watch just looks uncoordinated. Like you haven't thought it out or put effort into it. The first guy that went with the dark blue velvet was bold but because it was pretty close to black and the velvet made it luxury it looked like it belonged at a formal event.

When I see a sub at a formal event all I think is, "probably doesn't have another watch to wear". I'd buy a cheap £100 dress automatic and wear it over my £5000 sub any day when formal is concerned.

Buy the cartier or leave the sub at home if you ask me.

On the other hand who really cares what you wear ? I saw a guy in a low cut fish net vest go home with a very attractive girl a few nights ago. Some people just don't care about fashion or style and unless you work in the fashion industry it rarely comes back to have any negative effect on you. I've seen guys in £50 value suits promoted over guys going bespoke. In the grand scheme of things it rarely matters.

I'd lose the tux and go with the Cartier tank top - for simplicity, just keep the Sub in the pocket of your levis so you can 'subtly' keep track of when the ball is going to drop. Oh...and Happy New Year!!
