Am I crazy for wanting a 389?

I've been offered a 389 - never seen it in person and it is certainly on the big side - I can list dozens of reason why I shouldn't get this watch, but somehow I find it very attractive and compelling.

Anyone tried one on?

Haven't tried one one but don't limit your decision to some of the members here who are only interested in the same styles over and over again. If you check out their posts they recommend the same thing month after month, year after year........change for them is somehow blasphemy.

That 389 is gorgeous.........go for it!!!!!

Yeah, it's called being an enthusiast!

And for the record, I did tell him to go for it.

I like the 389 VERY much and I'm not a huge panerai sub fan.

I Love the looks of 389 and once there are discounts to be had, I will likely upgrade my 305 to 389 ...

The real question is the value aspect, isn't it? A mint 305 can be had for $6,000 while the 389 is $12,400. I'm not sure I can motivate that?!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the 389 is pretty much the same watch as the 305 but with a new ceramic bezel insert and some added anti-magnetism encasing to the movement?

Still, I find it such a nice mix between classic design with some modern updates. I think at under $10K I would be more compelled to jump on this watch.

but .. but ... since when does value have anything to do with this madness?

I'm bi-polar that way: rationale one day, the other not...

Ahhh......this I understand.

210. approximate value $4000
Unitas 6497 movement
Sapphire Display back
45mm
Add some gold hands....so nice.

232. approximate value $9000
Unitas 6497 movement
Solid Steel back
47mm
brown dial goodness

232 probable costs less/same to make....but 232 wins!!!!

Only difference is 389 has yet to prove its "value". Maybe it will, but I'd be waiting.

I love the look of the 389. And if money wasn't an object I'd say lock it in. But in terms of VFM, you can do better in a 305. And then there will be a school that says if you want a large diver with a ceramic bezel, get the DS. $ for $, probably a better watch than the 389.

Depends if you are buying with the head or the heart.

Hm, I wonder how the 305 would look with a PVD'ed bezel...
