Has anyone given you a hard time for your watch?

I'm sure this dosn't pertain to alot of people, but has anyone given you crap about owning an expensive watch? I'm rather young(18) and bought my first rolex earlier this year. I've wanted one since I was in the sixth grade and right when I graduated highschool I got a job working at U of M. Upon recieving my watch I was super excited and just wanted to show it off to the world, stupid me posts a pic on facebook and all I wrote was "loving my new rolex". To which many people replied quite negatively saying how I'm trying to be better than everyone, a moron for spending that much on a watch ect. I figured people thought I was being cocky online took down the picture and went on with my life. Up until a few weeks later I was at my friends house and his brother was giving me the same spiel that everyone gave me online. My friend asked to see it and his brother was there and he threw his $.02 and said that i'm a douchebag and how there are much better uses for the money(probably were). And now every time I go to put it on I think twice and sometimes i'll wear it but other times I don't. I love the watch and wear it to the mall and stuff, but don't wear it everyday as I really don't want to be hassled about financial deciscions i've made.(I paid cash for it, money was tight until the next paycheck but it wasn't a major financial setback.)

anyone have similar experiences?

And all of this happening made me find this forum(which i spend 100x more time on than i do facebook) and noones judged me here yet for having to cheap of a rolex!!!(some of you are crazy rich or crazy stupid reguardless I love your fine time pieces!)

No hassles. A few compliments. No matter what, i am always going to be very low key in any response I offer unless someone is being really obnoxious.

Sole exception might be if the other person is wearing a nice watch as well and wants to talk about it, but that's entirely different.

Do you really want friends like that? My advice, don't post pics of your watch on Facebook. It opens up the door for discussion and puts you in a vulnerable position.

Idk I guess your right. I just figured I see pictures of peoples breakfasts lunches and dinners daily, or 50 pictures in the same pose, what's a watch gonna hurt?

And no I don't enjoy having bad friends, I was just surprised that people would be offended by me "wasting" my own money.

This happens all the time even here...do you think that Ferrari or Porsche or (enter logo here) shows up perfectly in picture by accident?

Im 20 and have owned a Rolex since 17 and I Cant stand people like this! Its nice to have nice things. People have different ways of spoiling themselves, if I buy a expensive watch its a big deal since my phone can keep better time. But when I buy a bmw no one ever says why do you spend so much on a car a Honda Accord gets better mpg and more reliable for a fraction of the price. Do what I do. When people ask why you spend so much on a watch I just say listen, I like watches. I can sell this tomorrow for what I paid for it, and it brings joy to me everytime I look and see what time it is.

There are so many ways to counter the things that were said to you. Maybe the people who question your decision to buy a Rolex spend money on golf, or cigarettes, or Starbucks every day. That's their choice and if that's what they choose, they'll kiss that money goodbye. You can always remind them of that while pointing out that you can recoup every penny you spent on your Rolex (sometimes more).

Be prepared later in life to receive remarks of the opposite kind too - I went to an office Christmas party for my wife's employer one year (a hospital). Some of the doctors had heard of my interest in watches and wanted to see what I was wearing that evening (a 1957 Omega Seamaster - not terribly expensive, but a beautiful vintage watch, well suited to formal wear). One of the doctors took one look at it and remarked, "Oh.... so you don't collect nice watches?" I thought to myself, "Really, dude?" What kind of #$%@#& makes a remark like that to anybody?

I fully 110% agree with your statement, I have owned luxury cars and after 5 years they are worthless and end up having it in the shop to have work done to them the last years of its life. I find high end watches are the best luxury items to own. You buy them wear them, and when you get bored with the luxury watch you sell them close to what you paid for them.

90% of Facebook is a waste anyway.

You should also consider that people are jealous. While you worked. Saved. Bought a Rolex, they are updating their Facebook pages with photos of every meal.

I am the only person I know who has a rolex. I have gotten a little flack for it but when it comes from someone who just spent 50k on a truck that will be worth crap in 10 years I don't let it bother me. Everyone has different priorities.

Shake it off and move on. Wear your watch with pride, you earned it and you're free to buy whatever you'd like.

Don't stress about it too much. A lot stems from jealousy. But I would personally avoid putting pictures on social networks, your always gonna get a negative reaction and it also gives people ideas that your a potential target for theft... Its rare someone at your age will compliment it as they will likely be jealous of it.

People just have different priorities/ passions in life. A friend on mine just bought a $3,000 bicycle and I will never understand why he needs such an expensive bike, just like some people don't understand why I need to own an expensive watch.

Move on and enjoy your watch.

Most folks don't even notice my watch as it's SS. The rare comment I'll get is usually a compliment, but I have been given a hard time here and there for my watch. I have two times I can think about that someone had given me a hard time.

One was from a relative about a decade ago who thought I was spending money unwisely and thought I should invest my money instead or put it into a house instead of renting (I've since gotten married and bought a house all without selling my watch). I think he was just doing it out of concern and being helpful.

I have a coworker who is into watches who took notice of my watch and made comments that I must have tons of money since I own a Rolex (which isn't the truth!!). Here and there if conversation ever comes up about watches he'll still mention that. At least we've since found a common watch we both like, G-Shocks.

I'm not flashy and I don't shove the watch in people's faces. I prefer to keep it low key. I definitely would not post it on Facebook. That being said I enjoy my Rolex and it's worn almost every day. This forum is the only place I'll even openly talk about my watch with great enthusiasm. I'm guessing some of it comes out of jealousy from peers your age or some comes from concern that an 18 year old should be spending their money more wisely. Continue to wear your watch and enjoy it!

I say if you can afford it who the hell cares,,,but if you struggle to buy something then thats a different story I can see where people are coming from, but they still have no right to say anything,,,they are just jealous I would say. And your ONLY 18 live it up lol I bought SOO much useless crap when I was that age I wish I had got a rolex, I bought a luxury car and where is that car now long gone,,,I spent more then a rolex on clothing,,,,long gone,,,,spent alot more then that in a year partying,,again gone...I would say it was a good decision because at that age I spent I would say 60k a year and have nothing left now to show for it,,,well lot of good memories,,,, you can keep that rolex for life so dont sweat it people will alwasy be jealous of things they cant afford,,,,,I just recommend when you hit a certain age then you have to smarten up save up for a house ect,,,why worry what other people say? there is a time and place for everything at 18 unless your really broke I would say spend it all and just hope you land a good job later on loll if you add up how much you spend eating out or something else or if you smoke ect thats like a 5-10k habit right there so I think you made a good decision,,,

You've earned, you can do whatever you want with your money. I wish I'd be as smart to buy a Rolex when I was 18yo.

Let your friend show you what have they bought for their money and I bet you'll see tons of useless crap.

sounds like people are just jealous of something they aren't able to achieve. It sure is easy to shit on someone who has something better than you, especially when you're so young. Wear that watch proud. It's a symbol of your dedication and hard work. If you want something you go get it. That's what you did and you should be proud

Agreed!!!!

Any type of success breeds envy. If they don't know your dreams then they can't shoot them down. Do you, and share only with those who will appreciate and lift you up (TRF).

but I figure anyone say in 40s that buys a luxury watch and has a mortgage they might be pretty stupid thats just my opinion,,,i see too many people spend money on cars, clothes jewellery ect and, they have a mortgage until they are in ther 50s or 60s that is a BAD idea i think unless you have a small mortgage just to take advantage of low interest rates and have a ton invested ect

Welcome to the great world we all live in. Luckily you've found the best forum on the planet! As a young entrepreneur I've always marched to the beat of a different drummer, but that's a topic for another thread. Enjoy the watch, and use your head with Facebook..plenty of haters.
